Windows 10: Skype for Business desktop app on Mac replace Skype Meetings App (web)

In October, 2018, we announced a plan to offer the Skype for Business desktop app on Mac as our web-downloadable meetings client instead of Skype Meetings App, starting in December. Due to feedback from customers, we decided to postpone the change. Everything is now in place, and we will make the transition on April 5!

(The Skype Meetings App, or SMA for short, is a web-downloadable meetings app for use when a Skype for Business desktop app is not installed on a computer. SMA is available for meetings hosted on SfB Online or on SfB 2015 Server that is configured to use the online Microsoft Content Delivery Network (CDN).)

In order to provide the best and most stable meeting experience on Mac, we will provide the Skype for Business desktop app for all users. Starting in April, the joining web pages will only offer SfB desktop app for download.

The desktop app brings many advantages over SMA: Screen sharing, audio, and video are significantly more reliable. The meeting experience is built around a larger and more immersive display of video and shared content. Screen sharing from the Mac uses Video-based Screen Sharing (VbSS), which is faster and more reliable than Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) used by SMA. The app has also been optimized to work well with macOS 10.14 (Mojave), including Dark Mode.

We are also making two changes to the desktop app in companion with this change:

First, we are reducing the size of the desktop app installer. The desktop app is larger than SMA, so the download takes 5-10 seconds longer on average. This timing is also dependent on your network connection.

Second, we are adding support in the desktop app for uploading and downloading attachments in meetings, a feature that is available in SMA. The desktop app does not support whiteboard, polls, and Q&A. The Skype for Business client teams were busy in July, and we released monthly updates on all platforms. Follow the links below for details of features and fixes included in the releases.

Skype for Business apps for Windows

Skype for Business for Mac

Version 16.19 of the app was released on July 13, and details are available here.

Customers using Skype for Business 2015 Server can also improve the experience for Mac users by installing the July, 2018 cumulative update which includes many changes that enable functionality for Skype for Business for Mac.

Skype for Business for iOS

Version 6.21 of the iOS app was released to the App Store on July 20. This update includes the following improvements:

Quickly rejoin meetings on cellular network when WiFi is lost

Add button to rejoin dropped VoIP call by dialing in from mobile number

Allow users upgraded to Teams to sign in to get the full Skype for Business meeting experience

Fix to allow starting video in a call from certain Polycom devices

Fix to allow user upgraded to Teams from joining Skype for Business meetings

Update text and link to the privacy statement

Skype for Business for Android

Version 6.21 of the Android app was released to the Play Store on July 10. The update includes the following improvements:

Allow users upgraded to Teams to sign in to get the full Skype for Business meeting experience

Updated Google SDK to optimize for security and performance

Fix for users in Germany to sign in

Fix the layout of the Participants list of a meeting

Fix to show Meeting Join Audio Option dialog box before joining a meeting

Fix ability to add and remove a contact using the contact card

Fixes for app crashes

Update text and link to the privacy statement

Windows Phone apps Skype for Business, Teams, and Yammer discontinued

Windows phone apps for Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer are retiring on May 20, 2018

Summary

Effective May 20, 2018, the Windows Phone apps for Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer will be retired. Starting on that date, these apps will no longer be available for download from Microsoft Store, and Microsoft will no longer support them.

While Microsoft continues to support Windows 10 Mobile, we are not focused on building new features for the system. We will continue to invest in the Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer mobile apps for iOS and Android, and also in desktop apps for Windows and Mac.

Moving forward, Windows Phone users will have the best experience by using Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer in the mobile web browser.

How does this affect me?

After May 20, 2018, the Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer apps for Windows Phone will no longer be available from Microsoft Store. Existing users will have the following experience:

Skype for Business and Yammer apps may continue to work, but we can’t provide any guarantees. These apps will no longer receive updates or support.

The Microsoft Teams app will no longer work, and users will receive an error message when they try to connect.

What do I have to do to prepare for this change?

Going forward, Windows Phone users can connect to Skype for Business, Yammer, and Microsoft Teams by accessing them as follows:

Skype for Business: We continue to invest in the Skype for Business mobile apps for iOS and Android, and also in desktop applications for Windows and Mac.

Microsoft Teams: Users can access Microsoft Teams by using the mobile browser.

Yammer: Users can access Yammer using the mobile browser.

Camera not working in Skype for Business Web App

Hi All,

I've tried joining a Skype for Business meeting with my Surface pro 4, using the Web App.

But when I try to enable the video, it says there is no camera installed.

I am able to use the camera with other apps like Skype or the camera app.
