Windows 10: Skype offering Free calls to mobiles and landlines in Mexico

In light of the devastating earthquake that has taken place in Mexico—and the subsequent impact to the local communications infrastructure—domestic and international calls made via Skype to landlines and mobiles in the affected Mexico regions are free of charge until further notice.* This is effective immediately; the list of area codes are below.

Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by the earthquake. We hope this helps you reach loved ones, friends, and colleagues in Mexico.

The free calling applies only to Skype calls made to landlines and mobiles in the following Mexico area codes:

Mexico City: 55

Morelos: 734, 751, 731, 735, 739, 737, 769, and 777

Oaxaca: 995, 994, 972, 971, 958, 954, 953, 951, 924, 757, 287, 283, 281, 274, and 236

Estado de Mexico: 718, 716, 725, 724, 726, 597, 599, 712, 717, 722, 761, 714, 595, 723, 593, 588, 711, 729, 721, 728, 596, 591, 592, 427, 767, 719, 594, and 713

Chiapas: 918, 919, 962, 966, 961, 964, 994, 916, 967, 963, 968, 965, 932, 992, 934, and 917

Puebla: 953, 797, 776, 764, 746, 282, 276, 275, 249, 248, 245, 244, 243, 238, 237, 236, 233, 232, 231, 227, 224, 223, and 22

Landlines: 52 + (LADA or area code) + (phone number). For example, from Mexico City to Mexico City “52 55 12345678” or from Mexico City to Cuernavaca Morelos “52 777 1234567” or from Cuernavaca Morelos to Mexico City “52 55 12345678.”

Cell phones: 52 + 1 + (LADA or area code) + (phone number). For example, from Mexico City to Mexico City “52 1 55 12345678” or from Mexico City to Cuernavaca Morelos “52 1 777 1234567” or from Cuernavaca Morelos to Mexico City “52 1 55 12345678.”

How can I use Skype for free on my Windows phone like my son can on his iPhone?

Anyone can use Skype for free for "Skype to Skype" calls. That means the person on the receiving end must have the Skype app installed and you must be "contacts".

Skype Credit is required if you want to call someone's landline or cell phone. For what it's worth, I actually find the call quality using Skype to make long distance calls (even to landlines when I'm using Skype Credit) to usually be of superior quality
to what the traditional Telco's offer.
