End-to-end encrypted Private Conversations for Skype Insiders

We know extra protection is important as you share sensitive information over Skype so we’re excited to announce the preview of end-to-end encrypted Private Conversations, available now for Skype Insiders.

With Private Conversations, you can have end-to-end encrypted Skype audio calls and send text messages or files like images, audio, or videos, using the industry standard Signal Protocol by Open Whisper Systems.

The content of these conversations will be hidden in the chat list as well as in notifications to keep the information you share private.

Give it a try by selecting “New Private Conversation” from the compose menu or from the recipient’s profile. After the recipient accepts your invite, all calls and messages in that conversation will be encrypted end-to-end until you choose to end it. You can only participate in a private conversation from a single device at a time. You can switch the conversation to any of your devices, but the messages you send and receive will be tied to the device you’re using at the time.

During the preview, you will only be able to start private conversations with other Skype Insiders also running the latest version, and these interactions are limited to one-to-one conversations. Up next, we’d like to improve the UX around the invite to join a private conversation and bring the experience to the UWP client.

We’re looking to you, Skype Insiders, to tell us if this new feature works as expected before enabling it for everyone. Please submit feedback and let us know what you think!

Private Conversations are available now to Skype Insiders using Skype version 8.13.76.8 for iOS, Android, Linux, Mac, and Windows Desktop.

Easier to find friends & chat using Skype for Outlook.com

Since we launched Skype on Outlook.com, we’ve been listening to your feedback, and heard loud and clear that starting chat sessions with friends wasn’t as easy as it could be. Today, we’re excited to announce the worldwide availability of improvements to Skype for Outlook.com that makes it easier for you to find and chat with friends on Skype.

Improved contact list

Find your friends. If you have a friend in your address book (People tile), and that person has a matching Skype and Microsoft e-mail address, they will show up as a contact in the “Messaging” pane. Just click on their photo to add them to your Skype contact list.

New messaging features

Participate in and create group chats. Add people to a conversation by clicking on the “+” in a conversation.

Pick up conversations where they left off by opening your chat pane. Just click on the “” on the upper right and your most recent conversations are listed.

With Skype for Outlook.com, you can easily connect with your Skype contacts right from your Outlook.com inbox, so you can go from chat or email to a video call with just one click. If you haven’t tried Skype for Outlook.com yet, getting started is easy. Just link your Skype account and download the plugin – we think you’ll really like being able to launch video calls and chats right from your browser.

The Office Online real-time co-authoring feature makes it easy for you to work together with others on a document from your browser. Whether you are putting the final touches on a contract with your business partner or collaborating on an essay for a school project, Office Online lets you work seamlessly with others no matter where they are.Today we are happy to announce upcoming improvements to the Office Online co-authoring experience:

Document chat is available when collaborating with others in real-time in Word and PowerPoint. Simply click the Chat button to begin chatting with everyone working in the document.

Continue to chat with those same people after leaving the document via Skype on your desktop or phone. Know when your team is working on the document and chime in.
