Windows 10: Slideshow background reverts to singular picture when switching to different desktop

I have a custom theme with a slideshow of 20 pictures. When I set the theme on one desktop, and then I switch to a new desktop usually using the keyboard shortcut CTRL+WIN+[Left/Right Arrow Key], the background reverts back to the default Windows background picture. If I try to set the theme again, it works on that desktop, but then the background reverts back to the singular picture on the other desktop. Here are the steps I took per your suggestion.

1. Make Sure the Theme Isn't Changing Your Wallpaper
   
   • I created a custom Theme with Background set to Slideshow and Lock Screen to Spotlight.
     
   • Locked screen and logged back in all good.
     
   • Rebooted and both reset to Picture.
     
   • I reset back to Slideshow and Spotlight accordingly.
     
2. Turn Off Slideshow in Personalization Settings
   
   • I set Background to a color and Lock Screen to Picture
     
   • Restarted system.
     
   • Settings remained.
     
   • Reset Background to Slideshow and Screen to Spotlight.
     
   • Restarted system.
     
   • Settings remained for the moment.
     
   • Restarted one more time and Background reverted to Picture & Screen remained at Spotlight.
     
   • Reset Background to Slideshow.
     
   • Restarted again.
     
   • Settings remained for the moment.
     
   • Restarted again just to validate and settings remained for the moment.
     
3. Disable Windows Sync Settings
   
   • I cannot do this since the factory reset, my account cannot use my Microsoft account only the local. As such, Settings > Accounts > Windows backup > the option to Remember Preferences is grayed out; only available if using Microsoft account.
     
4. Use a Local Account
   
   • I can only use Local Account
     
5. Lock the Background Settings
   
   • This is not an option as, I’m the only user and with Home edition I don’t have Group Policy option.
     

Status: While running through steps 3-6 my Background reverted to Picture on its own, without me locking screen or restarting system. Mystery remains as to what’s causing this change on its own. I think Microsoft needs to get involved to evaluate this bug. I know I’m not the only one reporting this issue as I have found several articles over the past couple of years on this topic and don’t know why MSFT hasn’t gotten involved yet.

 

Windows 11, background keep resetting from slideshow to a picture.

I set my background in Windows 11 to a single different picture initially for both of my desktops (I usually keep 2 desktops on my laptop). Then I thought I wanted to set different slideshows for both desktops, then I found out that I could not do that, so I thought of instead setting a single slideshow same for the both. So while it worked, whenever I restart my laptop and change desktop from the opened one to another, both backgrounds get changed back to single pictures. I tried removing one of the desktops and setting the background as slideshow then restart, but then once I again create a new desktop and switch to it, backgrounds get reverted to the single pictures. Why is this happening? and How can I fix this? And can I have different slideshows for different desktops?

 

Background switches from Slideshow to Picture


Hey Everyone,

I upgraded my computer (Desktop PC) from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 RTM and while everything works good, I have an issue with my background settings.

I have a folder on a local drive that has all of the pictures that I want in my slide show, and it works fine for a while, but eventually later when I return to my computer, it seems Windows 10 disables slideshow and changes back to 'picture'. I have to manually change it back to slideshow and it works again for some time until it disables again.

I looked at my power settings and nothing in there shows to disable the slideshow on battery (I do have a UPC though) and have tried deleting all of my themes and creating a new one.

Anyone have any suggestions?

p.s. I am using a microsoft account and I leave my computer running all the time (never going to sleep).
