    Slow boot/shutdown/restart after installing a USB 3.0 PCI-E card

I have a HP Z400 workstation which I bought in 2010. It supports a two-port USB 3.0 card which I had installed until recently. It was the one that HP recommended. However, it stopped working and I replaced it with a different one, specifically an Anker card.

I now have a problem because the PC is very slow when booting. The power button lights up, remains lit for 45 seconds to 1 minute and then the normal boot process begins. Logging on is also very slow. The same applies when shutting down or restarting. There is a very big delay.

Are there any suggestions as to how to cut down these delays?

    :)

  2. My new USB 3.0 HOST PCI-Express card will not recognize any devices

The first card I tried was:

Inateck Superspeed 7 Ports PCI-E to USB 3.0 Expansion Card - Interface USB 3.0 5 Port 2 Rear USB 3.0 Port

SD Cards not working with Windows 10

Well I fixed my problem, by purchasing a Kingston USB 3.0 card reader and connecting it to my Inateck USB 3.0 PCI-E expansion card. Worked fine. Must be a problem with Windows 10 and various types of USB card readers. I'll bin my existing SD card readers
    then.

If you remove card does it boot normally?

What is connected to these two new ports? Does it boot normally if you disconnect items?

Have you tried a different slot?

Thank you for suggestions. After removing the card the boot process was fast. There was no delay before the POST and the login screen came up quick. I should add that I am quite sure that the card was properly placed in the slot. I had removed it and placed it again, earlier, to make sure that it was properly set in the slot.

I have a 7-ports USB hub connected to one of the ports to which I conncted a webcam and two extrenal drives. On the other port I have another external drive directly connected to it.

Unfortunately I don't have spare slot to connect the card to it.

  6. Are you using Windows Fast Boot?

Have you checked you BIOS for boot order. Could be it is checking USB devices first, and you said there were two, then coming to HDD / SDD.

See if you can prioritize your SSD / HDD as first drive to check.

I an using Windows Fast Boot. I tried disabling it, but there was no difference.
According to my BIOS settings my SDD drive (C drive) has priority over other hard disk drives, then over USB.

A couple of things that may be important are: The Anker card has 2 USB ports, but also a 20-pin Connector (can expand another two USB 3.0 ports). The HP manual mentions that I could add a card supporting 2 USB 3.0 ports. I wonder if the additional feature is complicating things.

The other point is that the biggest delay that I notice is a black screen before the screen that comes up on boot that gives me the option to enter Setup or choose the boot order for the particular session. I wonder what the PC is doing at the very beginning, before the power on screen appears.

If you disconnect everything from card does it boot faster?

There is a small improvement. I removed the USB hub and the external disk from the two USB ports and the time taken after power on until the option to enter Setup or choose the boot order for the particular session, was shortened to about 40 seconds (from 1 minute). This compares to practically less than 3 seconds when I used the previous USB card which unfortunately doesn't work any more.

The one I have is shown at https://www.anker.com/products/varia...8UPPCIE-2S20PU
I notice that the box the card came in indicates that it is "Compatible with Windows XP / Vista / 7". Perhaps it doesn't work with Windows 10? *Sad The reviews on that page mention that it does work with Windows 10...

How could I check the id device in Windows?

  12. Right click start, left click device manager. Find adapter, right click, click properties, then driver tab. If your device has vendor specific drivers I would think the vendors name you be there and not a generic Microsoft driver.

    EDIT:

So looking at install instruction they state install card and load driver.

    Is that what you did?

I only installed the card. There was a small size CD that came with the box but it had an executable on it (VIA_XHCI_Driver_V4.50A_AP.exe). Do you think I should run this? I thought that Windows 10 provides native support for USB 3.0. Since the box on the card doesn't mention Windows 10 I considered it risky to run this program.

  15. Yes you should install the driver but use the one from site. The link you gave me, over on the right, Downloads. The is one there and it says Win 7 and later. It downloads v4.90A

At least that is what I would do.

    Create a restore point first.
