Windows 10: Slow file saves 15 seconds for a simple Word 2019 doc in Windows 11

File saves are taking 15 seconds in Word 2019 in Windows 11. It's not a hardware problem - I'm using an external 1TB SanDisk Extreme SSD attached to a USB 3.2 port on an Intel NUC PC with 12th-gen i5 processor and 64GB Ram.I've tried a host of suggested solutions, including deleting the normal templates, etc., but nothing works. Until very recently I was using Word 365 on a Mac Mini M1, and also Word 2007 on an ancient custom PC, and they all worked fine, with fast saves.This happens with all Word docs, as tested on three SSD drives: internal M.2, internal WD 1TB SSD, and the external SanDisk

Opening a Word doc in a Second Desktop from Explorer

Thank you so much for your reply!

To clarify, the problem is that whenever I try to open another word doc in file explorer in a second desktop it goes back to the desktop in which there already is a word doc open and opens the requested doc there, instead of in the second desktop.

I have tried the repair and it did not help. Any other suggestions?

Word icons missing from Word docs in Office 2019

1. New ThinkPad X1 Carbon with Windows 10
2. Installed Office 2010 - everything fine
3. Installed Office 2019 still all good
4. Uninstalled Word and Excel 2010 - no problems
5. After some weeks Office 2019 turned into Office 2016 and Word docs became generic plain icons but still opened with Word
6. Tried every solution I could find in the internet including tweaking the registry
7. Removed Office 2010 using Programs and Features
8. Everything was fixed- Office 2019 back and Word icons back - Thank you Steve from this forum.
9. Then after just a couple of days I got a Windows 10 update and Word icons on Word docs disappeared again and as well Excel file icons and Office start menu icons disappeared except for Skype and one other (Outlook?)
10. An Office online repair got the Start Menu icons and the Excel files ones back but not the Word doc icons
11. Downloaded the Office removal tool and totally removed Office 2019
12. Reinstalled 2019 and no Word Doc icons as well as no more OneNote program even though one note files on desktop did have OneNote icons
13. Downloaded OneNote from Microsoft Store
14. Everything seems to be working now but still no Word icons on docs, just plain generic ones. But they do open in Word
15. I am relatively new to Windows 10 and it says I cannot undo the updates because they are more than 10 days old which does not even seem to be true.

Need Utility to read/convert older Word docs

The Word .doc extension encompasses four distinct file formats:

1. Word for MS-DOS
2. Word for Windows 1 and 2
3. Word 6 and Word 95 for Windows
4. Word 97 and later for Windows

I have Word 95 installed on an old computer with Windows XP. (I have Word 97 installed on another old computer with Windows XP.)

Word 95 can write the following formats:

• Word 2.x for Windows
• Word 95 for Windows
• Word 3.x - 5.x for MS-DOS
• Word 6.0 for MS-DOS

Word 95 can read the following formats:

• Word 6.0/95 for Windows
• Word 97 for Windows
• Word 3.x - 5.x for MS-DOS
• Word 6.0 for MS-DOS

I created some test files with Word 95 for each of these four type.

In Word 2019 I unchecked the options in Trust Center that blocked Word 2, 6.0, and Word 95.

With Word 2019 I COULD read and write the following:

• Word 2.x for Windows
• Word 95 for Windows

With Word 2019 I COULD NOT read or write the following:

• Word 3.x - 5.x for MS-DOS
• Word 6.0 for MS-DOS

This test showed that Word versions released since Word 95 for Windows can't read or write Word for DOS formatted .doc files. Note Word 97 couldn't read these Word for DOS .doc files but Word 95 could.

The last version of Word for DOS was in 1993. It is very possible that the .doc files the OP has were created by some version of Word for DOS.

@x509 if you want to attach one of the unreadable .doc files to a post I can try to read it with Word 95. That will at least verify whether it is a Word for DOS file or not.
