Slow internet speed from windows 10. Tried many fix options.

I apologize in advance for this being a long post.

After trying many fix options, I decided to try a forum. I have internet through Xfinity. My internet plan is supposed to be hitting speeds of up to 200mbps (megaBITS not megaBYTES), yet on their official speed test site, my speed is at about 95mbps at its peak. I even bought a new cable modem, since I heard xfinity has speed throttles that slow down your speed on their modems they provide you with. So, I had a technician come to my house, he saw me run the speed test on my laptop. IMMEDIATELY afterwards, I watched him run a speed test on his laptop from the same website, and his speed clocked in at about 186mbps. In BOTH cases, on BOTH laptops, the internet connection was WIRED ETHERNET, and NOT wireless, and BOTH our laptops were hooked into my cable modem, and the speed tests were not running simultaneously. Difference was, he was running windows 7 on his laptop. I am running windows 10 home edition. He told me he has had 4 internet speed complaints in a month, and they were all from people who ran windows 10. He concluded it was an issue with my laptop or windows 10 itself.

My laptop originally ran windows 8.1, and I upgraded to windows 10. However, I'm fairly certain my internet speed was the same before upgrading to windows 10, if I remember correctly, but I could be wrong. So I'm assuming it's because of Windows 10, since the technician had twice the internet speed sitting right next to me. I would really like very much to stay with windows 10, because of the cross-platform play with xbox one games. It also can't be a connection issue, because the wire was already checked and a new cable wire was already installed to replace the old one.

So I did some research, and found that many people are experiencing slow internet speeds after switching to windows 10. I tried the following methods:

    - No torrent clients or steam services were running
    - Switched from Google Chrome to Microsoft Edge
    - Turned off "Updates from more than one place" in windows update
    - Typed "netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled" in command prompt AS ADMINISTRATOR
    - Opened resource monitor under task manager, svchost.exe (netsvcs), was using almost no network speed, sometimes none
    - Ran windows update

I rebooted the system after EACH method, and my internet speed had not improved. Then, I found I could try running the group policy editor to fix my problem.

I tried to run "gpedit.msc", but that wasn't found. So I had to find it and install it. I then copied the required files into windows/system32 (“GroupPolicy”, “GroupPolicyUsers” folders and gpedit.msc file), after the install was complete. I tried running "gpedit.msc" again, and it opened, but all it said in the window was: "MMC could not create the snap-in." So I looked up how to fix this. I figured if I could edit the group policy, I could fix my internet speed. But I had to fix the group policy editor itself first. (So now I had to fix a problem within a problem. Lovely.) Here's what I tried:

    - System scan under command prompt (sfc/ scannow) windows resource protection did not find any resource violations
    - Deleted registry value FX:{b05566ad... ... etc
    - Turned on all Microsoft.net framework 3.5 features under "turn windows features on or off" in control panel
    - Looked under "C:\Windows\Temp\gpedit", opened "x86" AND "x64" in notepad, replaced all 6 instances of 'grant:r %username%:f' with 'grant:r "%username%:"f' for each, saved the files, closed, right clicked, ran as administrator.

I rebooted after each method, reinstalled the group policy editor, and it still gives me the same message. MMC could not create the snap-in. So I can't edit the group policy.

Then, just for the heck of it, I remembered an old extra laptop laying around with windows vista on it. So I hooked up an ethernet cable to it, and did a speed test on the same website on that laptop. Sure enough. The speed was around 95mbps. So either he had something specific done to his laptop to get 180mbps and my house and was full of bs, or windows vista doesn't have the right drivers.

I've just about had it, and I'm clueless. Can ANYONE PLEASE help me on this?? Is it a windows 10 issue?? If it's not, what else could it be?? Here are my specs, if that helps:

    - WIndows 10 Home (downloaded from microsoft, formerly Windows 8.1)
    - ASUS X550J Laptop
    - Intel Core i7-4710HQ up to 3.5 GHz
    - 12GB RAM
    - Nvidia GeForce GTX 850M, 2GB DDR3
    - 1 TB hard drive (2 partitions)

    :)

Very slow data transfer speeds Windows 10 PC to Windows 7 PC

I also have this problem, copying files between a Windows 10 PC and a Windows 10 laptop.

I have tried the Large Send Offload (LSO) fix and also the fix involving various "netsh int tcp set ..." commands.

Other network activity is fine, watching HD YouTube videos, downloading or uploading large (or small) files. The PC as a DLNA server streams 1080p without a glitch. Copying files locally from the same hard drive to an SSD is 128MB/sec. Wifi connection is
    114mbps (14.25MB/sec). Internet download is ~3MB/sec (upload 0.59 MB/s).

It's only the Windows file sharing that is slow. Copying from Win10 PC to Win10 laptop using Windows Explorer varies around 300-800kB/sec and doesn't maintain a steady speed. It would actually be just as fast (or slow) to upload the files to the internet.

Copying files from the PC to my phone has the same slow speed, so it seems to be a problem with Windows sending the file(s).

Rey Bel1, the symptoms are the same with many small files or one large one.

Slow internet speed from windows 10. Tried many fix options.

I just did a "slow internet" troubleshoot on a machine in which the culprit turned out to be Windows Update.
Not your issue, I know; but in troubleshooting there were a couple of other maneuvers I tried that you might want to throw in:

    • Go to network applet under PC SETTINGS and choose to "reset" the ethernet connection. This appears to automate a whole lot of stuff that you could do individually using explicit commands - then reboot.
    • Go to Device Manager, find your network adaptor, and tell it to search online for an updated driver; then reboot.
    • Go to the ASUS support web site and download their most recent drivers for your Ethernet adaptor (Atheros, RealTek, etc). Delete your current network adaptor using Device Manager, install the Asus official drivers, and reboot.

    95mbps sounds suspiciously like a 100mbps throttle.

It's not clear, but did the tech use the same cable as you were using? Some crappy cables only use 4 wires so are limited to 100mbps.

Also, check the "Speed & Duplex" in the advanced setting of your network adaptor in device manager. If it is set to 100mbps there's your problem. It may be set to automatic. If so, try setting it to 1gbps/full duplex.

And make doubly sure your modem has gig ports! (Yes, I know, the tech tested it but, hey, another check won't hurt after all the stuff you have done.

  8. Slow internet speed from windows 10. Tried many fix options.

Windows Update may be the culprit.

Don't do anything else and open task manager and see if there are any internet activities in the "Ethernet" tab.

Taking in all your suggestions:- I tried resetting the modem- I tried checking ASUS for drivers and all they gave me were DLL files that I couldn't understand and had no setup file- I went from ethernet to wifi and tried uninstalling the network adapter (ethernet driver) and reinstalling them (one attempt through device manager update and that made connectivity worse, and one attempt via deleting the software and reinstalling through realtek which disabled ethernet alltogether). So I had to reset windows 10 (clean reinstall while still keeping my personal files, but i lost all my programs and had to make sure windows update was still configured the way I left it)- Couldn't find an ethernet tab in task manager- Tried running TCP optimizer and setting to "optimal"- Not sure what cable the technician used, but my cable is a catagory 5e (which can run up to 1000mbps, way more than what my internet plan is). I doubt my modem has a throttle on it. Unless you're referring to setting "speed and duplex" to 1gbps full duplex (which i tried). The technician also tested my connection through my modem directly through ethernet.

I tried every suggestion all of you listed so far (hope I didn't miss any, since I've spent all day trying to solve this). Nothing has worked yet. Although I very much appreciate your feedback.

  10. I guess, you already have the latest Realtek LAN driver 10.010.

Change DNS, disable IPv6, LMHOSTS Lookup and NetBIOS over TCP/IP, you can do it via those commands:

wmic nicconfig where DHCPEnabled=TRUE call SetDNSServerSearchOrder ("8.8.8.8","8.8.4.4")
netsh int ipv6 isatap set state disabled
netsh int teredo set state disabled
    netsh interface ipv6 6to4 set state state=disabled undoonstop=disabled
    reg add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\Parameters" /v "DisabledComponents" /t REG_DWORD /d "255" /f
    reg add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters" /v "EnableLMHOSTS" /t REG_DWORD /d "0" /f
wmic nicconfig where TcpipNetbiosOptions=0 call SetTcpipNetbios 2
wmic nicconfig where TcpipNetbiosOptions=1 call SetTcpipNetbios 2

Try to disable DHCP and setup your IP/gateway manually.

Onve you do that, try to temporarily disable those services, to exclude them as a cause:

    net stop BFE /y
    net stop nsi /y
    net stop Wcmsvc /y

  11. Lighty Win User
I think we can mark this as fixed. I picked up a category 6 ethernet cable, and the speed is MUCH better, when i was using a category 5e cable before. It still varies, but it goes anywhere from 120mbps to 160mbps, which is a big improvement.
