Honestly googling has led to much more confusion. I'm trying to wrap my head around it but I'm wondering if it's even worth tinkering.

Also on an unrelated note my download speed is 26.81Mbps. Still not the amount I should be getting but very strange considering I didn't do anything.

  2. Ok maybe BIOS update can be put to one side. Powerlines basically come as a pair. You plug one into a power socket near your router and connect via its Ethernet port into a spare port on your router. You plug the other in near your PC upstairs and connect it's Ethernet port to your PC. Most of the data goes through your electrics in the walls. Make sure you get ones rated at a minimum of 500 mbits. The caveat is not to use them on power strips, they work best on their own wall socket. Plus they must be on the same ring main. I do Ethernet runs but I do use powerline for one part of my house to get my Apple TV online in my bedroom. Due to lack of sockets it is on a power strip so probably gets reduced throughput but it works really great allowing us to stream movies etc just fine

  3. I'll look into that but I'm wondering if some sort of interference has been introduced into my system somehow. I just find it strange that the card worked perfectly prior to the SSD install and reinstallation of Windows 10 and now is not working as well. I'll skip the BIOS for now but I'm gonna tinker around while I look into these powerlines.

Ok so I purchased my wifi card in November from Newegg SO I may just return it because it is, for all intents and purposes, incompatible with my system and still eligible for a refund. As much as I dislike that particular idea it may be the best solution I'll get out of this.I'm going to mark this as solved although I'm still not entirely sure what happened. I greatly appreciate everyone's help.

  5. Ok cool. I hope you reach a satisfactory outcome. Only if you get a chance sometime in future update the thread with hopefully some good news.

  6. Will do! Still have to research the powerlines and see if they'll work for me. If not I may have to find another wifi card.

  7. So I promised an update and here it is. Just got my powerline adapters in and set em up. The speeds are pretty decent, basically my old wifi speeds. I was using my usb dongle while I was deciding whether I wanted to go with them or another wifi card but my dongle is prone to random disconnects so I bought the powerlines out of frustration. I had also been looking for a wifi card that supported Widnows 10 out of the box but was having trouble so the powerlines seemed the best alternative. My only guess is there was some sort of interference introduced around the time I got my SSD because sometimes even my wifi dongle would start crapping out while others on my network saw no change in speed.

Am pleased they seem to be doing the job. At the end of the day you can't beat a wired connection. Direct Ethernet is best, followed by powerlines and wifi is most unreliable. I've had it where wifi goes awry in certain zones for no reason. And no amount of channel changing will cure it. Some devices cope better than others. All it takes is for someone next door to maybe install a baby monitor or video sender behind a nearby wall and it can swamp the 2.4 ghz spectrum around its transmitting area. Bluetooth being on or used nearby can also halve throughput. 5 ghz wifi is better assuming your wifi dongle/card and router supports it, but only because less things use the 5 ghz spectrum. Once more people and devices catch on this spectrum will get crowded out to. Although 5 ghz has a weaker output distance so walls are more likely to stop it in its tracks. Means 5 ghz signals less likely to infiltrate your area other than your own. At the end of the day it's a balancing act and it sounds like your powerline solution is the workaround. If you want to get really technical you could even use a spare router Ethernet plugged in to the Powerline upstairs and set it up as an additional wifi access point on a non overlapping channel to your router. Then you have strong wifi upstairs as well as down. Your machine may cope better with the much stronger signal and overcome the interference. It's worth checking your machine doesn't make a Bluetooth connection with anything. I don't use it myself but I know on my iPhone that if Bluetooth is active then I lose half my 2.4 ghz wifi speed on it. To get round it I use its 5 ghz capabilities instead.

    cheers, Wayne
