Windows 10: slower internet connection on ethernet than wireless

Discus and support slower internet connection on ethernet than wireless in Windows 10 Network and Sharing to solve the problem; checking on router settings it says it sees one port in use and is at 100mbps [img] also on adapter it says 100mbps [img] Hi there @pusheen... slower internet connection on ethernet than wireless

    Hi there

    @pusheen

I suspect could be a router problem

any half way decent Ethernet piece of hardware should give you this (even if your connection throughput won't give you that much). :

    Here's what I'm currently connecting

Slow lans at 100 Mb/s are 1) SKY Q box (don't ask how I got one of those back to Iceland !!!!! --connected via an Irish republic connection / subscription so OK !!!) ! and 2) amazon Fire TV box. These only need around 2 - 5 Mb/s in any case no problems there.

EX7000 is my Nighthawk Wifi extender. NAS'es will be LAN connected as soon as I've laid the cable.

Unknown devices are actually remote TV's - and the 100 Mbs links the slow SKY Q and Amazon fire TV box.

Note 5GHZ wifi on full duplex (in AC mode) can actually be FASTER than 1 Gb/s Ethernet -- so don't discount Wifi yet.

I'm not a network guru by any manner or means but something on your set up definitely isn't working properly.

Don't know about Virgin Media but if you are paying for 100 Mb/s and not getting it a call to customer services (I know in UK that's a real pain !!) then surely someone needs to come out and ascertain if problem is with their connection or your hardware. If it's THEIR problem then you should be entitled to some sort of refund.

    Cheers

  3. Do all your PCs show up as 100Mbps in your AC1200G's settings?

Have you tried to see what your wired PC->wired PC transfer speeds are? You can copy a big file from a shared folder and watch the Windows copy dialog. Or you can run some benchmark took like iperf or LANBench - A Simple LAN / TCP Network Benchmark Utility .

i changed the settings of the driver and it is now showing 1gbps and the second lan is cat5 as a test
i tired setting up homegroup but couldnt get it working and i couldnt get iperf or lanbench working either

  5. Does that mean your client and server couldn't connect to each other? Are you able to ping the LAN PCs from each other?

You can also try messing with the settings in the Router->Advanced->LAN->Switch Control. I wouldn't expect them to affect anything but maybe there's something specific about your setup.

Have you tried directly connecting a PC to your Internet modem (bypassing the router) to see if this still occurs?

I'm confused. Neither of the screenshots in the OP show a complete dl/ul cycle. The ping times to the Ookla test server for both are the same but the top one shows an upload in progress and the bottom one shows a download in progress.

Why not show the results of a completed cycle for both (and clearly label them) if one's supposed to be via ethernet and the other via wireless?

Also, given that your concern is on the LAN side of things (Ookla test server on iNet > SuperHub > Asus router > device via ethernet), I'm not sure measuring the WLAN side of things (Ookla test server on iNet > SuperHub > device via wireless) is going to give you a decent comparison.

IMO a better initial comparison would be:
Speedtest test server on iNet > SuperHub > Asus router > device via existing ethernet = result 1
Ookla test server on iNet > SuperHub > device via existing ethernet = result 2

If you have a laptop then do the first 2 tests then add another two tests:
Ookla test server on iNet > SuperHub > Asus router > laptop via 1-3mtr ethernet = result 3
Ookla test server on iNet > SuperHub > laptop via 1-3mtr ethernet = result 4

At least then you're only testing the ethernet connections/components (and any signal loss).

PS - If this is a Virgin SuperHub 3 then has its firmware been upgraded by Virgin Media? The original iteration had well-known problems when used in 'modem' mode.

    Hope this helps...

On the VM SuperHub, only one ethernet port is active in 'modem' mode. You would need to disconnect your Asus router temporarily and use the same port to carry out 2 of the ethernet performance comparison tests. This would be quicker than reverting the SuperHub temporarily to 'router' mode.

    Hope this helps...

@pusheen , I didn't carefully read all thread, but, did you check router settings, if there are any limitation per user or similar?

    Good screenshots. Thanks.

The VMDG480 is the original SuperHub 1. I'm amazed the Virgin Media support person didn't pick up on that and offer a replacement. However, VM may still be sticking to its "free upgrade only if it's broken otherwise £50" policy.

I suggest it's worth carrying out the ethernet comparison tests with and without the Asus router connected. If you can prove that your SuperHub 1's throughport is sub-standard in 'modem' mode then surely that's a reason for a free upgrade. Currently it doesn't look like it's even passing through 100Mbit/s, let alone 1000Mbit/s.

PS - The SuperHub 2ac has better 5GHz speeds and is more comfortable supporting multiple wireless devices at the same time (up to 20).

    Hope this helps...

    Hi there

If you are doing an upgrade and don't want Wireless -- then a decent 4 port switch could also be an answer --- have the cables from the computers going into the switch and you only need 1 LAN cable going to the router -- these switches are cheap and can easily do 1 Gb/s -- assuming your Virgin media thing is capable of it -- no experience of Virgin media - but the switch idea should save running a load of cables all over the place --simply have ONE from switch to router.

Also it only counts as 1 LAN connection if you are restricted on LAN traffic -- never heard of that being done but my experience of the UK is that they just do almost anything different from anybody else - not always a bad idea but -- well different. !!!

I suspect your router is bust or no good -- !!! I also don't know why more people don't advise the use of switches -- they used to be expensive and for businesses only -- now very good and cheap for home/ small offices. 4 computers on a switch won't slow internet down as far as LAN is concerned - switching speeds are electronic -- far faster than you can type or even an SSD can write at when down loading.

You can get a decent one for around 15 EUR -- 10 GBP or so -- here's a good 5 port one on Amazon

NETGEAR GS205-100UKS 5 Port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop Switch: Amazon.co.uk: Computers Accessories

Instead of me running 4 / 8 cables over 100 metres in hard frosty ground etc - I only need ONE and I'm using an 8 port switch in my shed - so when I'm ready I'll really restrict any Wifi activity on my setup.

I currently need weather to clear up but running 1 cable is better than 8 !!!!!!.

    Cheers

At the home are there wall outlets for the ethernet?
Didn't that take the router out of the picture?
Or did you have to move the computer and router to each room in the house?

It's not usual to quote my posts... but

Did you check possible bandwidth limitation in router?
