  1. Sluggish Explorer when opening zip "compressed folders"

I'm having this persisting issue where Explorer becomes very slow when I open a zip file with it. It's been going on for some time now. Memory usage of the Explorer process stays normal, and CPU doesn't spike. Still it has even gotten so bad that Explorer crashed altogether.

I've done some internet searches and saw that I'm not the only one suffering from this and it's been going on for at least two years. I haven't found an explanation or a solution for it.

Have you experienced this and have you found out the cause or a cure?

I'm using the latest Windows 10, but this problem dates back to previous versions of Windows 10 for me.

Some more info: 7zip handles those zip files fine and I'm running 8-core Ryzen with 16GB memory, no issue there. I know a bit from Windows since I've been using it since W95, which essentially forces you to certain level of expertise due to constant problems with the system.

Sluggish Explorer when opening zip "compressed folders"

When Explorer opens the compressed packet, it becomes slow.

    @he852100

Justify Explorer, No *Tongue i don't think i would be able to do that.

Please use 7-zip to open archived files instead of explorer, because your machine becomes sluggish.

Other reasons as to why you should use 7-zip instead of explorer, see below.

    • High compression ratio in 7z format with LZMA and LZMA2 compression
    • Supported formats:
      • Packing / unpacking: 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP and WIM
      • Unpacking only: AR, ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, CramFS, DMG, EXT, FAT, GPT, HFS, IHEX, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MBR, MSI, NSIS, NTFS, QCOW2, RAR, RPM, SquashFS, UDF, UEFI, VDI, VHD, VMDK, WIM, XAR and Z.
    • For ZIP and GZIP formats, 7-Zip provides a compression ratio that is 2-10 % better than the ratio provided by PKZip and WinZip
    • Strong AES-256 encryption in 7z and ZIP formats
    • Self-extracting capability for 7z format
    • Integration with Windows Shell
    • Powerful File Manager
    • Powerful command line version
    • Plugin for FAR Manager
    • Localizations for 87 languages

Or are you dead set to having all of your archived files open up in explorer?
