Small Wrinkle in Anniversary Update....MBR Disk

Just tried to get the Anni. Update on my new PC and to my surprise I was told my Partition is not suitable for a UEFI Firmware. ( so I think it wants a GPT Disk )

Windows can’t be installed because this PC has an unsupported disk layout for UEFI firmware.

It didn't complain 1st time round , so this is one I haven't seen before....

    - I could (may) use Minitool to Make the SSD GPT instead ?

    - Maybe try with the a new Media Creator USB , inplace upgrade?

Any other Ideas before I mess with this ?

How can I partition a 6TB HDD under Win 10?

In Disk Management, Right click and delete the small partition (2048.00 GB) that was created then right click the Disk (e.g. Disk 1 Basic 5588.91 GB Online) at the far left and select Convert to MBR Disk. You can then allocate the entire drive to the partition.

  3. Windows 10 Anniversary update will not see partition

Thanks for the reply. Tried all that before and no result. I have moved all 800GB of game data onto the first 2TB partition and installed W10 Anniversary and converted the disk from MBR and expanded the first partition to fill the disk. So problem solved
in a roundabout way. I think I installed the update and rolled it back four times in all !

    From the screen shot.
    • Your C partition was installed with MBR partition scheme
    • Your B partition is System Reserved and normally contains WimRE.wim and BCD but was not used. Somehow the BCD was moved to C Drive (marked as active)
Did you setup Windows using RAID ?
I guess with the way you setup, Windows updates got confused.

Small Wrinkle in Anniversary Update....MBR Disk

Thanks Feather , I can't open that log file the article mentions, a permissions issue I guess but I am sure it is the GPT thing , the rest of the article tell me how to create the needed MSR partition , but 1st I need to convert the Disk to GPT.

Yes I have Raid enabled for the Intel Controller as I have a 3 disk Raid 0 Array but the SSD is not part of the Array . It sure took a bunch of messing with Boot Options in the Bios to get Win10 installed , I then noticed it hadn't created the Recovery Partition or the EFI Partition , so I used Minitool and did the Recovery partition myself having been caught without it before, and moved the Recovery Enviroment to it using a couple of Tuts. here. I think C was already bootable (active) from the initial install though.

Looks like I need to convert to GPT and then make the 128mb MSR partition too, strange though as the updates since 240 have gone okay.

I left the Disk MBR originally as some rescue Software can't operate on GPT Disks , though most software is slowly catching up on that issue, I skipped Win8, so most of my "rescue" kit is most Win7 or earlier "aware"

No, you don't. 128 MSR is only created in Windows 8. In Windows 10, it's only 16MB. If you want to fix those partition, use this link below to convert it to GPT using Macrium:
Solved Old Recovery partition - Windows 10 Forums
NOTE: You need to set the BIOS with UEFI.

You don't need any of those. I know software such as Hiren's boot CD won't work with GPT but I also know you have been using KYHI's recovery disk so that's enough.

Thanks TOPGUN , I'll take a look at that Tut.

Yes the MBR issue was why I started looking for new Tools like KYHI's PE and I have been Using Macrium a while doing scheduled backups.

The Bios is using the Windows BootManager but I will have another look at it too, thanks.

Ok here is the link to TopGun's instructions
and his Macrium Template for GPT Disks (Partitions 1-3) if you want to read the Thread

Solved Old Recovery partition - Windows 10 Forums

but here is the writeup again and mine below it :

Different manufacturers such as ASUS, HP, TOSHIBA etc... configure the partition sizes and scheme differently so that they can add their own recovery tools, diagnostic tools and some even set up the partition as OEM partition then when you upgrade to Windows 10, additional Recovery partition is created, making them a mess.

Based on what you described above. If it were my PC then here's what I'd do to get the partitions layout correctly as if it is a fresh install which contains only the partitions that I mentioned above: 450MB Recovery, 100MB EFI System, 16MB MSR and C drive.
Since you've already had the backup image of your current Windows disk then it is safe to reconfigure your Windows 10 partition scheme using strictly with Macrium.

    • OPTION 1:
Wipe out the whole disk and do a fresh install to get the first 3 partitions ie. 450MB Recovery, 100 EFI System, 16MB MSR then use Macrium boot disk to replace the fresh install C-Drive with the C-Drive from your Backup then D-Drive after the C-Drive.
      OPTION 2:
To save time re-installing fresh Windows 10 from option 1, you can download the template of the first 3 partitions from here:
      BootEFI_Only-00-00.zip - Google Drive
From Macrium, select the template then restore to current Windows drive with the template. Again, within Macrium, select your backup image, copy your C-drive from the backup image then Data partition after C- Drive
    • From Macrium, click on "Fix Windows boot problem" then reboot your PC ( very important )

Once done. You should have a partition scheme as follows:
    450MB Recovery
    100MB EFI System
    16MB MSR
    C: Drive
    D: Drive

IMPORTANT: The procedure must be done using Macrium Boot Disk since you cannot perform the steps while Windows is running.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    I choose Option 2: above

1.) 1st I made a Full backup of Windows to my USB External HDD with Macrium V6.1366 (12mins) and verified it.

2.) Made new USB Rescue Key with Macrium Reflect (just in case)

3.) downloaded Macrium Template File TopGun Provided above and extracted zipfile to USB Key made in No#2.

4.) Using another of TopGun's Tips I had made Both a MacRescue Partition (3GB) on my Media Server's Hard-drives and a 3GB KYHI_PE Partition last week so I rebooted , and booted via F8 Menu off my USB Media Server's 3GB Fat32 KYHI Partition as it contains Macrium Rescue Free and Minitool Partition Wizard too (a good thing as it turned out ...see below)

5.) I Opened MacReflect and Looked for Mac.Reflect Images to Restore, and found Template provided in No#3 by TopGun and restored it to my SSD ( have Faith ! ) it Overwrites ALL Current Partitions ( the leap of Faith) and only took 44secs to restore *Smile

    6.) Then I Looked for
Mac.Reflect Images to Restore again , and found My Full Backup made in No#1 and dragged C:\ Partition ONLY into the now unformatted space left on my SSD after restoring TGun's Partitions. Then Hit Finish to Apply the restore and waited the 11mins for restore to happen.

7.) Went to Other Tasks >Fix Windows Boot Issues and let it find the new C:\ Drive , however in my case MacReflect had labelled my new C:\ Partition as H:\ Drive , an issue so.....

8.) I Exited MacReflect and Opened Minitool Partition Wizard , and used it to Change the Partition Letter of H:\ on the SSD back to C:\ ( you must hit Apply to finalise the change)

    9.)
Went Back to MacReflect > Other Tasks >Fix Windows Boot Issues and let it find the new C:\ Drive and let it apply the Fix . (I did not let it reboot for me as I was in the KYHI PE enviroment. So I just exited MR and then shut down from KYHI-PE, but you may not be suing KYHI's Boot disk just the MR one)

10.) On reboot I checked the Bios Boot order but all was well , so it booted into Win10 , without issue *Smile

11.) Opened Settings >Update >Checked updates > and Win10 Anni. Update 1607 is currently Downloading. *Smile

BIG Thanks TopGun that was basically Painless *Smile

Great to hear. The procedure also automatically converted your MBR disk to GPT disk. For reference please post your new GPT disk layout. Use the traditional Disk management with graphical interface (Control Panel->Disk Management)

Somewhere , perhaps on the Kyhi Thread you posted how to make a small 2-3gb Fat32 partition on a Harddrive and copy the Macrium Reflect Rescue Disk to it from the Mounted .iso. I went one step further and did it for the Kyhi .iso too , as there are 4 HDDs in my MediaSonic Probox. I actually also have one for Acronis Rescue (WD) and the TechBench Win10 Installer too now.
