SmartScreen pops up "unrecognized app" warning

Hello!I'm working on a release of an update for software that's been around for 5 years. We have a EV certificate with Sectigo, which I understand is supposed to help with reputation. Nevertheless, when we go to install the software, SmartScreen pops up an "unidentified app" warning. The certificate was briefly expired this summer for a couple months. I spoke with Sectigo and they said to contact Microsoft to let them know we're using an EV. Is that necessary when we already had one? Could there be another issue?Thank you, appreciate any help you can offer!

    :)

  2. turn Smartscreen off entirely?

    Hi Dan,

SmartScreen Filter automatically scans applications, files, downloads, and websites, blocking known-dangerous content and warning you before you run unknown applications. If you wish to disable it, there are three different Windows SmartScreen
    filters (Block, Warn, and Off).

If you select Block, it will block unrecognized applications.
Warn option will show you a warning that you can click through.
    Off
will disable Windows SmartScreen entirely. Even if you chose
    Warn
, SmartScreen will always block known-dangerous content. It will only warn you before running unrecognized applications; however, if you disable SmartScreen entirely, it won’t be able to block known-dangerous files. For this case, we suggest that
after you saved your settings, try to restart your computer, and see if it works.

We would appreciate it if you could get back to us and provide us your feedback.

  3. SmartScreen not so smart.

    Hi,

I would like to inform that Windows SmartScreen helps keep your PC safe by checking downloaded files and web content within apps to help protect you from malicious software and potentially unsafe web content. Before an unknown or potentially
unsafe downloaded file is opened, Windows will display a warning. If SmartScreen detects potentially unsafe web content in an app, Windows will display a warning in place of the content. To disable SmartScreen, follow the steps below:

    • Type SmartScreen settings in the Search box and press Enter.
    • Click on Change Windows SmartScreen Settings in the left navigation pane.
    • Select the option, Don't do anything (turn off Windows SmartScreen) and click on OK.

If you would like to develop a program, then suggest you to post your query in MSDN forums in the link provided below:

Msdn forums - Visual Studio General Questions

Hope the information provided is helpful. Feel free to write to us for any other assistance with Windows, we'll be glad to assist you.

SmartScreen pops up "unrecognized app" warning

    Smartscreen blocking an EXE

I do not get an option to save the password (nor would I think I would want that). What I am getting is the Smartscreen popup which states Windows Smartscreen prevented an unrecognized app from running. Saving a password would by pass a check so that does
not seem like a good idea.

Running as administrator did not change anything. Smartscreen still popped up stating it was an unrecognized app.

The application is Action! PC Football. I installed the game and it ran fine. They provided an update (which was a new EXE) and that ran fine. They have provided a newer update and that is the one getting the popup.

Since they are saying they compiled the code in the same way, why is Smartscreen flagging this version and not a prior one.

The FAQ did not help. It implied I was getting a message from a browser and it is from trying to run the actual program. The other suggestion in the FAQ was to disable Smartscreen. If that is the recommendation by Microsoft, then I fail to understand
why they provide a check they recommend disabling?
