Snipping tool not working

I'm trying to use the Snipping Tool (Windows+Shift+S) but when it opens up to let me select which part of the screen to select, it blanks out the entire screen so that there is nothing to select. I'm not sure when this stopped working since I do not use it very often. I'm using:

• Edition Windows 11 Pro
  
• Version 21H2
  
• Installed on ‎11/‎6/‎2021
  
• OS build 22000.613
  
• Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22000.613.0
  
• The Snipping Tool shows version 11.2201.12.0
  

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Win+Shift+S Shortcut and Snipping Tool Not Working After Windows Update

Hi everyone,



I'm facing a challenging issue where my Win+Shift+S screenshot shortcut and the Snipping Tool/Snip & Sketch have completely stopped working following a recent Windows update. Despite extensive troubleshooting, the problem persists, and I'm hoping someone here might have insight or solutions I haven't tried.



Problem Description:

- The Win+Shift+S shortcut ceased to function unexpectedly after a Windows update.

- Neither Snipping Tool nor Snip & Sketch launches using the shortcut or even when opened manually.

- Upon system restart and initial attempt to use the shortcut, the mouse cursor momentarily changes to an hourglass, indicating the system recognizes the command, but the application fails to launch. This occurs only once per restart.



Troubleshooting Steps Attempted:



1. Basic Checks:

- Verified keyboard functionality, including the specific keys (Windows, Shift, S).

- Utilized the virtual on-screen keyboard, indicating the issue isn't hardware-related.

- Checked and adjusted Clipboard History settings.

- Updated Snip & Sketch/Snipping Tool from the Microsoft Store.



2. System Diagnostics:

- Ran System File Checker (SFC) with `sfc /scannow` - no integrity violations found.

- Executed DISM commands (`/CheckHealth`, `/ScanHealth`, `/RestoreHealth`) - no component store corruption detected.



3. Advanced Troubleshooting:

- Tested across different user accounts - issue persists.

- Uninstalled and reinstalled both Snip & Sketch and the Snipping Tool.

- Attempted to reinstall the Snipping Tool via PowerShell (`get-appxpackage *Microsoft.ScreenSketch* | remove-appxpackage`).

- Installed all available optional updates.



Additional Steps Based on Community Suggestions:



1. Group Policy and Registry Checks:

- Verified Group Policy settings for Snipping Tool were not configured to disable it.

- Checked the registry for any entries that might disable the Snipping Tool - none found.



2. WMI and Services Diagnostic:

- Investigated Windows Event Viewer and found several warnings and errors related to service failures, including WMI issues.



3. Attempted WMI Repository Repair:

- Attempted to stop the WMI service to rename the repository for rebuilding, taking note of dependent services that would be affected (e.g., Intel(R) services, IP Helper).



Despite these efforts, the issue remains unresolved. I have not yet attempted to roll back the recent Windows update or perform a system restore due to the absence of a suitable restore point. Reinstalling Windows is a last resort I hope to avoid.



Has anyone experienced a similar issue or have any additional suggestions I could try? Your assistance and insights would be greatly appreciated.

Cannot screenshot with Snipping Tool

System Model: OMEN Laptop 15-ek1xxx

Symptom: The Snipping Tool app opens as expected but when trying to take a screenshot by clicking on "New" inside the app or using its shortcuts (PrtSc or Windows + Shift + S), the cursor briefly changes to buffer and the app minimizes, but nothing happens.

Troubleshooting Steps Taken:

• Terminated Snipping Tool

• Updated Windows and drivers
  
• Set time automatically
  
• Set time to October 30/31, 2021
  
• Enabled/disabled settings inside Snipping Tool
  
• Enabled delay and fullscreen options inside Snipping Tool
  
• Enabled notifications and priority notifications for Snipping Tool
  
• Changed Snipping Tool to run "Always" as a background app
  
• Enabled Clipboard History
  
• Enabled "use PrtSc to use Snipping Tool"
  
• Clicked on "New" inside Snipping Tool
  
• Used the PrtSc key and Windows + Shift + S shortcut
  
• Checked that the keyboard hardware is up to date and not faulty
  
• Pinned Snipping Tool to the taskbar
  

Advanced Troubleshooting Steps:

• Disabled "Do not allow Snipping Tool to run" in gpedit (Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Tablet PC > Accessories)
  
• Created the "DisableSnippingTool" key in registry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\TabletPC and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\TabletPC) and set it to 0
  
• Created the "EnableSnippingTool" key in registry (Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\SnippingTool) and set it to 1
  
• Ran sfc/scannow
  
• Ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  
• Restarted Windows Explorer
  
• Uninstalled and reinstalled Snipping Tool via PowerShell/cmd
  
• Perfomed a Clean Boot
  
• Created a new user profile
  

What I have not tried:

• Enabled App Permissions Picture on Snipping Tool (the option does not show on advanced options)
  
• Ran the Windows 11 Snipping Tool Directly from the "Windows.old" folder (I do not have Windows.old folder)
