    Essentially I was just doing something for someone else to get updates and downloaded the update tool on my PC to make sure I had the right thing.

    I remembered though, that the 2004 update has always said it's not available for me, which has confused me a lot to be honest. But then the update tool is telling me to go right ahead with it...

    So what should I do???

    My hardware certainly isn't old, so I can't imagine why it says I can't update in the system settings.

    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700X
    • GPU: RTX 2080 Ti
    • MOBO: X570 AORUS ULTRA

    Intel Readies P55 Chipset B3 Stepping Update

    Intel's is readying a hardware update for its P55 Express chipset, currently the only core-logic for the company's brand new socket LGA-1156 processor platform. The new B3 stepping of the P55 PCH will bring with it a little more than new MM number and S-spec numbers. A list of changes is as follows:
    • New MM number and S-spec numbers for the converted products;
    • Firmware and minor BIOS updates are required with the conversion;
    • Processor MRC/microcode update required to enable future processors;
    • Recommended storage driver upgrade from Intel MSM 8.9 to Intel RST 9.5.
    Although it is listed that the MRC update enables 'future processors', Intel, in a statement issued to X-bit labs assured that the current B2 stepping of the chipset (found on current socket LGA-1156 motherboards) does not leave out support for any of Intel's new LGA-1156 processors that are slated for release in the very near future. The dual-core "Clarkale" 32 nm processor will be supported by both B2 and B3 steppings of the chipset.

    P55 B3 stepping is pin-identical to P55 B2, and hence motherboard vendors will not have to come up with new designs. Sampling of the new stepping began as early as on October 02, 2009, and it is scheduled for shipment to manufacturers by the 7th of December, 2009. P55 is the performance core-logic for the LGA-1156 platform. It supports Core i5 and Core i7 "Lynnfield" processors with discrete graphics.

    My PC was ready for 2004 update, but now it isn't anymore.

    Apparently nobody (that I've seen) is recently getting it thru Windows update, and all are getting the same message, or very similar. Nobody knows the exact reason in general or on their machine. MS may know, but isn't saying. Lots (millions) in the same boat.

    Look on the bright side...... you haven't crashed yet trying to update, and I suggest you don't. It's not recommended. Yes, there are some who have updated test systems to see "What if", but they have the resources and backups to play with it. Normal everyday users should not even attempt it. It's a blessing millions don't even know it's there.

    So I'm a bit confused here. My system update's say that the update isn't ready yet......

    My PC was ready for 2004 update, but now it isn't anymore.

    Interesting. To test that I've just restored the 1909 Macrium image for one of my machines that was offered 2004 on the day it was released, 27th May. It successfully updated to 2004 through Windows Update and has been running 2004 without issue since then.

    Today, after catching up on 1909 updates, Windows Update still says:The next version of Windows is available with new features and security improvements. When you're ready for the update select "Download and install".
    So it would appear MS haven't entirely pulled the plug, at least not for machines that MS think are compatible. It may well be that the list of such machines is shrinking, but it's not zero yet.

    I have more than just the one machine so I'm in a position to test it - but then only on machines that have been offered 2004 through Windows Update (I'd never recommend forcing the install). TBH there's little that's significantly new in 2004. Just stick with 1909, there's no compelling reason to update any time soon.
