  2. Unable to output 4k resolution (potentially) after recent update.

A colleague and I have been using 4k external monitors with our windows 11 dell laptops for the last month, for which we've been able to set the correct resolution. However, at some point in the last week we've both lost the ability to set any resolution above 1080p for the external monitors.

    I've tried the following:

    • A different hdmi cable.
    • A different hdmi port.
    • Updating the graphics drivers.
    • Installing older graphics drivers.
    • Rolling back what windows 11 updates I could (very limited).
    • Resetting windows 11.
    • Reinstalling windows 11.
Does anyone have any other suggestions of things to try? Additionally, the intel graphics command center recognises that the monitor is 4k, but it can't override the windows display settings.

  3. Unable to output 4k resolution (potentially) after recent update.

    Hello Andrew Watson,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I've noticed that you've tried a number of solutions to the problem of not being able to output 4K resolution on an external monitor, even reinstalling Windows 11, and if even that doesn't work, I honestly don't think it's a Windows problem or a Windows update.

Now that you've tried many of the common solutions, I'll add a few other steps here for you to consider:

    1. Check the monitor Settings:

Some external monitors can adjust the output resolution of the monitor in their own Settings menu, the monitor usually has a menu system accessed through a physical button on the monitor itself, please check if you can do this, if so, try switching the resolution.

    2. Verify that the monitor is correctly recognized as 4K on other computers:

Use the same wire to connect to other computers for testing, this is to confirm whether there is any abnormality in the monitor, if you find that the monitor can not be recognized as 4K in any device at this time, I think this may be a failure of the monitor, you may need to contact the monitor support staff for this problem.

    3. Check the display adapter properties of the monitor:

Right-click on the desktop and choose Display Settings.

Scroll down and click Advanced Display Settings. Here, you will notice that there are desktop mode and active signal mode in the display information, if the real resolution here is not the same, please click "display adaptation properties of the monitor" and then select "List all modes", if you can see 4K resolution here, please select it and then click OK.

This operation may be able to retrieve the 4K resolution.

    4. Update the BIOS:

Sometimes, updating your laptop's BIOS can solve hardware-related problems. Visit the Dell Support website to check if there is a BIOS update for your laptop model, and if so, it may be helpful to assist you with the BIOS update under the guidance of the laptop brand support.

Disclaimer: Microsoft provides no assurances and/or warranties, implied or otherwise, and is not responsible for the information you receive from the third-party linked sites or any support related to technology.

If you are going to modify BIOS Settings, please back up all your personal files first to ensure you do not lose data.

    5. Check for monitor firmware updates:

Check to see if your external monitor has firmware updates available. Manufacturers occasionally release firmware updates that can address compatibility issues.

If all of the above methods do not work, there may be a hardware problem with the laptop's graphics hardware or the monitor. It is recommended that you contact Dell Support or the monitor manufacturer for further assistance.

  4. Solved : DELL Unable to Output 4K Resolution to external monitor after update

Windows 10 4k Output Option Disapeared

I am working on a 1st gen Microsoft Surface Laptop. I recently purchased a Samsung 4k monitor, and connected to my Surface Laptop using a DisplayPort to HDMI cable. The very first time I plugged it in, within Windows display settings, the option for 3840x2160 appeared in the resolution list, and the image on my monitor was in 4k.

The next time I turned on my laptop, the image quality had dropped back down to 1080, and the 3840x2160 option is no longer available in the resolution menu.

I reset my laptop and monitor. I unplugged and re-plugged the DP to HDMI cable. The monitor does not have its own built in resolution control panel, so I cannot adjust settings for resolution on it.

I updated my Intel graphics card driver, rolled it back, then updated it again. I updated the Samsung monitor driver. My Windows OS is up to date.

I went into advanced display settings, and in "view all modes", the 4k option was not available on the drop down list.

This is driving me nuts because it worked flawlessly the very first time, so I know the setup (laptop, cable and monitor) are capable of 4k output. Now it seemingly will not work.

    Any advice?

    Thanks,

    Chris
