[solved] Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration

So... I just updated from win 7 to win 10, as I got it for free. All went smoothly, but there was no ethernet connection. I'm running a custom built pc, connected to my router via ethernet cable.

At first windows detected the cable, but said: ''Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration." I was on about around the settings, and deleted the ethernet network from windows' settings. I thought it would come back by just re-plugging the cable. This didn't happen. What happened was, that the whole 'Ethernet' tab disappeared from the 'Network & internet' menu!

I also don't have 'Wi-fi' or 'Airplane mode' tabs in the menu... Well I have a pc that doesn't have support for wifi so that might be why...

Does anyone have a clue on how to get win 10 to detect the ethernet cable, and maybe that way bring back the 'ethernet' tab?

Oh, and I tested the ethernet cable on my laptop (running win 7), and it worked fine.

    Thanks in advance!

    :)

New computer: Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration.

Are your Network Card drivers up to date?

Have you checked using another Ethernet cable?

Can your ISP offer any help?

  5. in run box type ncpa.cpl
and let us know if you see Network connection icons if no, reinstall ethernet drivers if yes what does it say, (unidentified, No access etc)
Are you directly connected to Modem or is there a router is between.

Well, I got it fixed... Should have thought of updating the drivers earlier, I guess it was kinda obvious. It's pretty hard though, to download drivers from the internet, without an internet connection... Plugged my phone to the computer via usb, and shared the phones internet connection.

If someone else has the Ethernet tab missing, I got it back by going to Control panel - Network and sharing center - 'change adapter settings' there I re-enabled the ethernet connection I had deleted earlier.

  7. I had the same problem. I upgraded from a perfectly working Asus M32 running Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. After the install I had no internet connection and the troubleshooter told me "ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration". I uninstalled my Intel Ethernet driver by going to the control panel>device manager>network adapters>Intel Ethernet Connection 1217-V>right click>uninstall>OK. I used my other computer to download the driver and reinstalled it. BOOM! Internet connected. I don't know if the problem is with Intel ethernet drivers or others. Regardless of the brand... reinstall the ethernet driver. That's why I recommend to download any drivers beforehand when upgrading to a new OS. I have had this problem myself in the past, so I now know and advise others to download any drivers beforehand.

  9. Always a great idea. I keep a flash drive updated with drivers and important apps. This way, if I ever need to reinstall or set up a new machine, what I need is readily available.

  11. I copied the install file for the update to Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller, but Windows won't allow the install, says the correct driver is already installed ( Realtek PCIe FE). I've also tried diagnostics, config release and renew, no help at all. Any other ideas?

You either run the setup as Administrator (right-click on the file) or you manually force the driver from Device Manager. You always select the last choice, do not let Windows search for the driver. When you see a button "Have Disk" click on that and browse to the driver folder to proceed. Select the first result and you should be OK.

In some LAN drivers there are some DLL files and an INF file (you see these if you unhide extensions). In that case only manual driver installation is possible, I'll explain. In other drivers there is also a setup.exe file that you can run to install the driver. If you have that file, then you can run it with Administrator privileges if you right-click on it and select Run as Administrator from the drop-down list. In the first case where there is no setup to run, click on the search icon on the taskbar and search for Device. You should see Device Manager as a result, click on it to open the Device Manager. Alternatively you can open the "traditional" desktop version Control Panel (search for control), change view to "Large Icons" from top right and then click on Device Manager. Once there expand Network Adapters and right-click on your Ethernet adapter, select Update driver software at the top of the list. The first option is to let Windows automatically install the driver. You don't want that, click the last option instead. Then click again the last option. In the next step you should see the "Have Disk" button. Click on that and browse to the folder where you expanded the driver files. The driver is usually a ZIP or RAR file. Use WinRAR or other utility to extract the files in a folder. This is the folder where you should browse from within Device Manager. Once you browse to that folder, select and open any INF file from the list to see all the available drivers. Select the first from the list (doesn't make much difference selecting another) and proceed to the next step. That's it.
