    SOLVED - Is HelpPane.exe a virus?

My antivirus - Bullguard - has recently started to react to HelpPane.exe and every time I open up my computer, I get a pop-up message telling me that Bullguard has put HelpPane into quarantine. I've looked around a bit on the net and it seems to me that this program has mostly been an issue with Windows 7. Today I work with Windows 10, so I don't know how I shall react to the message. I've searched the comp for virus both with Bullguard and Malwarebytes AM and neither has come up with any reports concerning threats. If HelpPane is a legit program, shall I configure Bullguard to accept it?

Thanks in advance for any view on the subject.

    :)

  3. How do I stop f1 opening a browser window on "how to get help with win 10"?

Thanks so much! That worked. So simple, i didnt expect it to work, yet F1 no longer opens up the annoying help. Im on windows 10 as well.

To make F1 do nothing, run this cmd script with administrator privilege:

    @echo off

    taskkill /f /im HelpPane.exe

    takeown /f %WinDir%\HelpPane.exe

    icacls %WinDir%\HelpPane.exe /deny EveryoneSOLVED - Is HelpPane.exe a virus? :(X)

To make a cmd script, open notedpad, write the command and save as name.cmd

    SOLVED - Is HelpPane.exe a virus?

Hi, find and submit the file to Virustotal, a web site which will check it against numerous AV engines.

To find the file, if you can't easily, install and run one of
Ultrasearch or Locate32 (free) - these will quite quickly index all your filenames and folders, then give an instant result.
    Very useful.

It appears that there is a vulnerability that has been patched by MS for this issue:
    CVE-2017-0100 : A DCOM object in Helppane.exe in Microsoft Windows 7 SP1; Windows Server 2008 R2; Windows 8.1; Windows Server 2012 Gold

Best to make sure your system is up-to-date with all Windows Updates. Then, submit to Bullguard as a suspect file, or possibly a false positive, and see what they say.

I've now run the file in Virustotal and it got 0/61 reports and it's not considered a threat in any way evidently. I also looked into the vulnerability issue and tried to understand the article as best as I could. It seems to be about "Improper Identification". However, if there should have been a patch issued, I would have got it since I'm updated to my teeth. Just checked a cpl of minutes ago and no further updates are available. If there is one for manual download, where can I find it?

If there is none available, I will of course have to report it to Bullguard then.

Thanks in advance for further assistance.

Sounds like you should just set it as an exception, and report it as a false positive as you suggest.

Hello again! I've now reported HelpPane.exe to Bullguard as a false positive and everything is now peace and quiet here after that. Virustotal site is indeed very handy to use and I've added it to my faves. Thanks!
