Windows 10: SOLVED - Windows 10 1803 - How to change a mobile hotspot from the default of public...

Hi all,

I have a Wireless adapter that supports the Windows 10 Mobile Hotspot function.

When I turn Mobile Hotspot on and go into Control Panel/Network and Sharing Centre I see two active networks:

1 My Wireless Network that is connected to my router. This network has been specified by me as a Private Network.

2 The network that is setup as my Mobile Hotspot connection. This network never prompted me as to whether it should be Private or Public and is currently specified as Public.

I wish to change this Mobile Hotspot network to be a Private Network as it is only going to be used by local trusted devices but I cannot see anywhere to change this.

I can easily toggle my Wireless Network connection between Private or Public but the Mobile Hotspot connection seems impossible to change. I've looked in Settings and Control Panel and also from the Network System Tray icon.


It does appear in Control Panel/Network and Sharing Centre but selecting its Properties there doesn't allow me to change the type of Network between Public and Private.

Would be good if the network was changeable like the Wireless Network connection.

How do I make the hotspot a private network?

After all, I only connect with private devices to it, and I want certain firewall rules active that I have set up for private networks.

You may change the password of your mobile hotspot so that the person you don't allowed to use it can't connect to it. To assist you better, we'd like to know if you've tried changing the password. Which build and version of Windows 10 are you using?

In the meantime, we suggest that you follow these steps below on how you can change the password of the Mobile hotspot.:

• Open Settings then select Network & Internet.
• Choose Mobile hotspot.
• Under Mobile hotspot section, you can see the current name of the Wi-Fi hotspot and password. To change mobile hotspot name or password or both, click the
  Edit button.
• Enter a new password for the network. Click Save button. Note that the password must be of at least 8 characters.
