Windows 10: Solved Windows10 Update Fails with 0x80070714 - PTC Windchill Caused It

Hi, I just want to share my resolution to this problem because I spent two full, frustrating, work days trying to resolve it.

When installing the Windows10 1909 update, the installation would fail after about 45min with error code 0x80070714. I tried every possible solution I could find online to no avail. However, I discovered the solution burred deep in a response to one of the threads offering solutions.

0x80070714 is not an uncommon error code but this solution only applies to systems with PTC Windchill installed. Windchill is a Product Lifecycle Management software package used by Mechanical Engineers to store and revision control 3D model data for product design.

Solution:

- Go to Add or Remove programs in the control panel, locate PTC Windchill and uninstall it.

- Run the Windows10 update

- Reinstall Windchill after the update has completed successfully.


Side note: PTC software has been the persistent root cause of many headaches and obscure bugs for my organization. PTC focuses on sales and does not seem to bother fixing all these headaches once you are locked into their software eco-system. Learn from us - avoid PTC at all costs. Get SolidWorks instead, your engineers will thank you.

Windows update failure: Feature update to Windows 10, version 1703 - Error 0x80070714

For what it's worth, I was finally able to install the 1703 update after removing a program called PTC Windchill. It is a PLM system (business software for product design) that ties heavily into the Windows file system and controls permissions and read/write
access to certain folders.

I had tried everything suggested here prior to uninstalling. First reboot after removing the program triggered and completed the update. If you have anything similar, it may be worth looking into removing it, updating to 1703, and then re-installing it if
it is compatible.

I have no need for any business software for product design and don't know of anything I have installed that is PLM system software or anything similar to PTC Windchill software. I bought this computer a year ago and only used it at home. Not that something
could be installed that has the same characteristics as PLM system software, but to my knowledge and searching through my programs, nothing similar exists on that computer.

 

Windows 10 fails to update


When you finish testing the Avast suggestion, make sure that you restart your machine.

Then if the issue persists, please return to the trouble shooting list in post# 89

I think there are three steps that remain; the WU troubleshooter, reset WU components, and manual WU reset.
