Some applications fail to open occasionally with no prior warning

For the last year I've been having trouble with a certain couple of apps that fail to open completely, they instead open as background processes as seen in Task Manager. The first one being Discord, I could be happily using it today, shut down my computer and boot it up tomorrow and it won't open once my system has booted. Clicking the icon opens a background process but that's about it. At the same time Google Chrome experiences the same exact thing. The two do not experience this problem separately, they always experience it together! I've been trying to figure out why for ages. This problem seems to come and go and I wouldn't say has any particular pattern either.

What I've done so far is:

    - Reinstall both Discord and Chrome numerous times

    - Asked Discord Customer Support about it and installed their Beta release they gave me a link to

    - Done a total reinstall of Windows bare in mind I kept files, which seemed to fix the problem for about 5-6 months and then it reappeared up until present

    - Put both apps on my antivirus' bypass list, incase that was the issue

    - Tried running both as admin and giving them full admin rights

I've also used sfc /scannow in CMD to make sure of no corrupt system files. This sometimes comes back saying there are some corrupt files, but never solves the issue. Some people I've asked say it could be something to do with Windows versions 1809 or 1903 but I'm not entirely sure. It's something that will come and go when it pleases, it's really getting under my skin now!

    All help is greatly appreciated.

    :)

    Windows fails to open applications

    Hi,

Once I have several applications open Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 refuses to open further application. I have heavy-weight applications like Delphi and Eclipse open, but the OS has coped with this in the past.

No error messages are reported by the application I am attempting to open, and there are no messages in the event viewer. What is really strange is that once the OS gets itself into this state, it appears that the OS can't allocate enough memory to perform simple API calls. If I go into an application that is already open and try to open the file menu, or right click on the taskbar to open the context menu, nothing happens.

If I close a few applications, then the problem goes away. The Task Manager performance tab indicates that I still have ~1Gb of physical memory available.

I think this could be caused by:

    - A memory module is damaged. My memory is comprised of 1x1Gb modules. When the system attempts to allocate memory in the second module, it is unable to. I think this is a bit of a long-shot because I wouldn't expect my PC to boot if a memory module was playing-up

    - I've installed something that has put something malicious on my PC. The only things I've installed recently are PRGrep and WinGrep, but unfortunately I didn't make a system restore point, and windows hasn't retained those old restore points. However a full Sophos scan doesn't show-up anything.

Any suggestions on how to diagnose/fix this welcome because I'm baffled as to what is going on.

    Thanks,

    Frank.

  3. applications not opening

    Hi,

For us to isolate your concern with opening/accessing your app, we would like to know the following:

    • When did the issue first begin?
    • Were there any changes made on your computer prior to the issue (e.g., updates, software installation)?
    • What application are you trying access?
    • Where did you download your application?
    • To make sure that we have not missed on anything, what troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

We look forward to your response.

Some applications fail to open occasionally with no prior warning

Opening specific applications on startup of windows in specific windows 10 desktops

    Try this:

Add FF, Anki and Evernote to %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Now for all three program do following steps:

    1. Open the application.
    2. Re-size the window so that it is not maximized or minimized.
    3. Move the window to the monitor you want it to open on by default.
    4. Close the application. Do not re-size prior to closing.
    5. Open the application.
It should open on the monitor you just moved it to and closed it on.
    6. Maximize the window.

The application will now open on this monitor by default. If you want to change it to another monitor, just follow steps 1-6 again.
