  1. Some programs don't get automatically added to Open With list, and I have to do it manually...

In previous versions of Windows, I could simply open a file in a program and then that program would appear in the Open With list. In Windows 10 that sometimes or always fails to happen. I had to edit the registry, using OpenWithProgids, to make it appear. When done correctly the change is immediate.

I see references to OpenWithList, but that seems to not be used by Windows 10 21H2. Very few file types have stuff there, and putting stuff there has no effect. Also, adding file extensions to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\audacious.exe\SupportedTypes was not helpful.

First the Progid needs to be created. It's something like this. Note the backslash escapes for backslashes and quotes, and how some things need to be in quotes.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Audacious.m3u] @="M3U File" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Audacious.m3u\Application] "ApplicationCompany"="Whatever" "ApplicationName"="Audacious" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Audacious.m3u\DefaultIcon] @="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Audacious\\bin\\audacious.exe" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Audacious.m3u\shell] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Audacious.m3u\shell\open] "Icon"="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Audacious\\bin\\audacious.exe\"" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Audacious.m3u\shell\open\command] @="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Audacious\\bin\\audacious.exe\" \"%1\""

Once you have that, then you can simply add the Progid to OpenWithProgids, creating that key in the registry if necessary. An example:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.m3u\OpenWithProgids] "Audacious.m3u"=""

I guess Windows accepts various different types there. Here I'm using REG_SZ, but I've also seen other apps use REG_NONE (which can't be created from the regedit user interface) and REG_DWORD. The important thing is the Audacious.m3u part matching the Progid created above.

This works but I wish I didn't have to go through all this to make it happen.

  3. Change "Open with" list items

This Nir Sofer utility shows gzdoom on the list, I also tried to add it with this old program that you linked but windows explorer seems to ignore this.

Also the suggestion that I leave 'Always open with...' un-checked. resulted in that it opened it once but never added it to open with list permanently. It stays top open with dialog but not to context menu.

Some programs don't get automatically added to Open With list, and I have to do it manually...

Can I customize the list of suggest apps in the "Open with" menu?

Hi, FWIW, I found that Atlantis Word was already added to the Open With list for .pdf's - although it is incapable of opening them.
    (Is that so with Word?)

It did show in the Open With list, and when clicked stated it could not open the pdf except as a text file (or similar). I.e. it gave a sensible warning message.

I therefore chose to delete it from the Open With options for pdf. Why it was added I don't know.

In your case it seemed Word had been successfully added - you add an item, click to Save it, and then should see this confirmation:

Perhaps if a program not registered to handle an extension is added to the Open With list for that extension, it doesn't appear in the menu- would have to test that.

** Well, I tried adding Wordpad to the OW list for png, and it appeared in it, and attempted to open the file- garbage of course.

I wonder if Word might have appeared in the Choose another app list..

Example of a lot of options being presented (png)
