    Hi.

    I have my DHCP lease set at around 45 minutes I cannot change it in my routers settings. At each 45 minute mark, I lose my internet connection for about 5-10 seconds. I have reset my router and tried everything with the hardware, but I have read older threads from 1 year ago where win10 was the problem. See here:

    I do not see how that update can be my problem after 1 year. But I would like to have some insight if this problem is common and/or still occurs because of Win updates. Pinging Google gives me "request time out" and "general failure" when internet is down, about 5-10 seconds.

    KB4493509 causes 6 second IP drop at DHCP lease expiry

    I'm not sure why this problem suddenly showed up in
    KB4493509

    But one of the updates that this Cumulative Update replaces was KB4490481, and that update:

    • Addresses an issue that causes Windows to reuse an expired Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) lease if the lease expired while the OS was shutdown.

    So someone at Microsoft has been patching the DHCP code, and it looks to me like they created a new bug.

    KB4493509 causes 6 second IP drop at DHCP lease expiry

    A new network problem since KB4493509 was installed. Uninstalling and blocking the update fixed the problem for me.

    I run some internet monitoring and streaming on my Win10 Home computer and after KB4493509 was installed I discovered that my IP traffic was failing for a period of about 6 seconds each time my DHCP lease expired.

    From my router's DHCP logs it looks to me like lease renewal attempts fail (it appears that the computer is unable to process the ACK from the router) until the lease finally expires and then the computer requests a new lease, and that succeeds. But while
    that negotiating is happening all IP traffic fails (for about 6 seconds).

    DHCP lease expiring every hour

    I'd be looking at your own modem.... since that device is acting as the DHCP server for your home network. It's typically the DHCP server (the modem) that determines the lease time.... the DHCP Clients (the PCs) don't really control the lease time.

    I'd recommend that you consult the modem's webpage to see how you can control the DHCP options

    BTW: Why is this a big deal.... I can't image that a short lease would be causing you any issues...

    well, what happens is, every hour when the lease expires, my internet connection drops for a short 3-6 second window. I agree this shouldn't be much of a problem, but when you're in a gaming household and that connection drops for even a second, we all get
    kicked off our game/discord/skype etc. The modem was provided to us by our ISP, and they came out and replaced it, but we are still having the same issue, and because it was provided by them I have absolutely 0 control over any settings that will help us.
    So, you've helped me at least feel like I'm not crazy and it's most likely an issue with their service.
