Same problem with mine. Trying to avoid a clean install - want to leverage an upgrade. Appears to be a major bug with the Windows 10 upgrade. The error trapping and associate messages are poor. Hopefully there is a fix posted soon.

I checked my system locale and it is indeed set to "English (United States)." Although, the error message looked like this for me:

Something happened, Windows 10 installation has failed error. [IMG]

But maybe the two errors are related?

Something happened, Windows 10 installation has failed error.

I've tried this 4 times, starting with a totally empty C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download directory each time. All fail the same way with the 80070005 error.

I found a solution and I think it might work for you too since you problem seems very similar. It turns out that there was some problem with the boot configuration data and I simply had to rebuild it. I found good instruction of how to do it here - https://www.winhelp.us/repair-your-c...8.html#bootrec - look for "Step 1.3 (optional) - repair Boot Configuration Data". More clear and straight forward instructions can be found here http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixthe...re-windows.htm , but they only work for legacy boot mode, if you have UEFI boot mode you will need to use following commands instead:

    diskpart (opens Disk Partitioning tool)
    select disk 0
list volume (please note the number of the volume that has no drive letter assigned and has FAT32 listed in Fs column)
select volume <the number of ~500 MB FAT32 volume with no drive letter, or with label ESP>
assign letter=Z: (gives drive letter Z: to EFI System Partition)
    exit (closes Disk Partitioning tool)
cd /d Z:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\ (changes current folder in Command Prompt window)
attrib Z:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD -h -r -s (removes hidden, read-only and system attributes from BCD folder)
ren Z:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD BCD.old (renames BCD folder to BCD.old)
    bootrec /rebuildbcd (retries the rebuild)

I tried running the Media Creation Tool X64 multiple times, and it does nothing...no error messages, no setup screen, no "Something happened"...nada, zilch, nothing at all. Any ideas?

I can verify that this advice solved the failure at 24%. It was the boot record causing the problem. Many thanks.

Hi Sniper, you know i had problems with the upgrade for my 4th computer, since you tried to help me with that.

After trying to upgrade some 7 times, i tried to find a solution for the problem on the net, but also gave feedback to Microsoft, without a reply, but i guess they have enough work right now.

Finally i looked here on the board and found what i quotes above.

And it works also for my problem....very strange .... only one command to do.

Right now installation is busy and should end in half an hour or so.

    Kudos to you and thanks

    Jeff

I found myself the solution after 2 days of searching the Internet, however, I believe that this error is not the same for everybody.

My Internet connection, A1 mobile Internet here in Austria, had firewall and antivirus on my connection without my knowledge.
The moment I disabled these services from my online account with my internet provider everything works now as expected without problems or stupid messages like “something happened” that I received when I was trying to download the ISO of windows 10…

The firewall & antivirus of my provider prevented the download.

    That’s it..

    hi Ivan,

do not know if already ok for you, but i did get the same message and the solution from Sniper was that was needed. So one instruction to run after a clear of one folder.

This also worked for me. I was upgrading from 8.1 to 10. I tried different ways others suggested and none of them worked (always failed at around 24%). After rebuilding the Boot Configuration Data, windows 10 installed successfully. I am now running win 10. Thanks so much, cifad.
