  1. something is wrong with my computer monitor or onboard video card

Hello I updated my Dell Optiplex 790 and now I can't get my computer or monitor to talk. And I just bought a HDMI cables two display port adapters and even tried swapping out a harddrive and reinstall windows nothing is working. I know the tower is working because it lights up a game keyboard. I have no idea what to do beside buying a new monitor which I can't afford at the moment.

    :)

    Monitor

That typically means the monitor not receiving a signal from your graphics card (or onboard graphics chip.)

    • Your video cable might be loose or damaged.
    • Your graphics card might be damaged. (Usually this is due to heat buildup inside the computer.)

It's also possible, although less likely, that the video resolution is set outside the range that the monitor can handle.

Replace video card in Windows 11

How do you replace a video card in Windows 11 if you have no video output, due to not being able to install the card's drivers until the card is installed, and there are no onboard graphics on the mobo?

Here is what I've tried so far:

    • Disconnected all other peripheral devices(except monitor, of course), then booted with only the replacement card physically installed
      ,
    • Re-installing the old card along with the replacement card and installed the drivers for the replacement card, then uninstalled the old card via Device Manager and physically removed it and left the replacement card installed. But, when I boot the machine the monitor tells me it couldn't detect any HDMI signal.
    • Tried using the VGA port of the replacement card, but got the same result(monitor tells me there's no VGA signal)
    • In all cases, checked to make sure the monitor was configured for the specific video output
    • Removed and reinstalled CMOS battery, then tried to boot with only the replacement card installed
My mobo is a Gigabyte B450M DS3H WIFI rev. 1 with the latest UEFI upgrade installed(66b).

My APU is an AMD Ryzen 5600X.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Cannot Display This Video Mode on Windows 10

To isolate this concern, kindly follow the troubleshooting steps below:

    • Reset the cables between your computer and monitor.
    • Use other video cable.
    • Use the monitor on a different computer to check if it's still working.
    • Use a different monitor on your computer to check if the video card is still working.

    Note:

    • If using the monitor on a different computer works, then the issue is with your video card.
    • If using a different monitor on your computer works, then the issue is with the monitor.

Let us know how it goes.
