Windows 10: Sorting deselects previously selected files, unfortunately

Once upon a time in File Explorer, I could sort a folder by file type e.g., *.HEIC, quickly select all files of that type, then resort the folder by name or date, and the selected files would remain selected in the new sort order. This enabled me to delete superfluous, near-duplicate files easily. Now, every time I re-sort the folder, Explorer automatically deselects all previously selected files. This is a functional downgrade for my GenX ****. Does anyone know of a workaround? I tried searching this page for "sort deselects files" etc to no avail. Also looked through the Explorer options a

If you click in a blank space while selecting multiple files they will be deselected, that's the intended behavior.

Purpose example: You selected multiple files but realized that the files are not sorted the way you want, click in a blank space to deselect the files, sort them the way you want, and select them again.

 

When I'm selecting a file to be uploaded/used from file explorer I can't deselect a file

In those web prompts where it asks you to upload a file and a special file explorer pops up, I can't figure out a way to deselect files. Normally in file explorer CTRL + Space will deselect items. However in this special file explorer prompt nothing happens, and I can't get off of a file. Normally this wouldn't be an issue, but this makes it a nightmare for sorting by date, type, etc. In this case... when I want to upload my file, I want to grab the most recent file, so I sort by date, and usually this would bring me to the top of the file explorer. But instead, because I've already selected something, the view remains on the selected item and I would have to scroll to the top to get what I need. And as said before, any hotkey that deselects files is not working for whatever reason in this upload file file explorer prompt.... the only solution I've found is to click on empty space, which not always available, and I'd rather not jump between the mouse and keyboard for what seems to be a stupid easy task.

I'm thinking File Explorer (details view). Having selected all, shift-space deselects many -- but not all. I didn't find shift-space listed on any shortcut guide, so not sure whether that's a kink in my PC. Odd that there is no way to do that. Maybe an AutoHotkey macro?
