Windows 10: Sound Coming From Speakers Instead of Headphones

Hi there,I've seen the related topics but none of them is similar to my issue.I'm using my headphones on my Surface Pro 4. My headphones were working properly but all of a sudden for no reason they stopped working and the sound is playing through main speakers instead. As you see in the screenshot above, "headphones" is selected. but when I play with that trigger to adjust the sound volume, that "Asterisk" sound doesn't play.But when I play a video on YouTube, the sound comes through speakers and I can't turn the volume up or down because I have to choose "speakers" first than adjust it.Here y

I recently bought Bluetooth headphones, and they worked just fine as did everything. yesterday, seemingly spontaneously, I couldn't get sound to come out of my laptop's speakers. I have three sound devices, speakers, headphones, and headphones hands free audio. The interesting thing is that all three of them play through the headphones. If i disconnect the headphones by powering them off, there is only one sound device, the speakers and when I select it, no sound comes out, as if the computer is trying to play through the headphones which are off. I've tries looking on the internet for other people with the same problem, but all the questions are the other way around, can't get sound to come out of the headphones.

My daughter's new laptop (HP Windows 11, purchased 8 months ago) is having an issue with the headphones. In the last couple of days, whenever she plugs them in, the sound still comes from the speakers, not the headphones.

These are simple wired in-ear headphones that work fine on other devices. I've tried other headphones that work fine in other devices, all with the same result.

I've tried setting headphones as the default playback device, but when I select it in the list, Set As Default is greyed out.

I checked the drivers and they are all up to date. I also ran the audio troubleshooter and it found no problems.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Method :

I would also suggest you to make your headphone as the default device when it is plugged in.

This may happen when you have the external speakers set to default.

Perform the task mentioned below to set headphones as default:

1. On the start screen of windows 10 press the ‘Windows key + X’ key on the keyboard and then click on control panel and then Hardware and sound option.

2. Click in Sound, then a new window will open up.

3. In the new windows click on the tab "Playback" and right click in the window and click on Show Disabled devices.

4. Now check if headphones are listed there and right click on it and choose enable.

5. Highlight that headphones and click on "Set as Default".
