Sound Driver issues with latest 1909 update April 28th 2020

    Hi,

A few days ago my Lenovo Think Center stopped making sound all together

After a great deal of digging we found that this issue was probably due to a missing driver.
In the device manager page, we located a driver under "Other Devices" that had a yellow caution mark on it, and this allegedly missing driver is called Intel High Definition DSP
When checking properties you can see the error code 28, which some googling explained is a missing driver. At this point we're unsure why this happened, but no biggie, let's go install the correct driver.

We visited the manufacturers website and Lenovo has a recently updated Realtek High Definition Audio Drivers, so I installed them, rebooted the computer, and found still no sound, still no fixed driver.

I repeated similar versions of this about a dozen times, downloading compatible drivers and then trying to install them using the wizard or manually numerous times. I saw that rebooting the computer itself could help scan for new drivers and replace them, and nothing worked. Even uninstalling the broken driver, using a Lenovo System Reset tool couldn't bring the driver back.

I've spoken to Lenovo on the phone several times today and they say they've gotten almost 10 calls about a very similar issue since the most recent update, I'm guessing this happened in the past few days. Lenovo eventually recommended that we try hard resets of the computer.

There were no previously saved restore points to go back to, and no options to revert to a previous version of Windows 10. We backed up the computer, did a full reboot, and set up the computer again as if it were new. Still, no sound, no fixed driver.

my question is two fold: what the heck happened to this driver, why can't we update it at all??

and importantly, how can you revert back to a previous version of Windows 10? All the tutorials I see are circa 2019 or earlier and Microsoft has removed these options from their sites and from their computers. I was told by Lenovo that there should be some kind of Installer Tool that can be downloaded which would allow you to select a previous version of Windows 10, but I have failed to find that on the internet.

Please, help find a previous version of Windows or help with the installation of a driver that allows this computer to make sound again.

Thank you. I'll provide further technical spec of the machine below

Device name: Intel High Definition DSP

User.000 issue after updating to 1909

I'm one of the many people suffering from issues with user profiles after applying Update 1909 to Windows 10. I've read all the threads I can find on the topic here and have followed the suggestions, all to no avail. Any other thoughts are appreciated.

After applying Update 1909, the ProfileImagePath was changed to c:\users\User.000
One file that was always in use and couldn't be removed was left in c:\users\User (can't recall or find the exact file now), so I could never rename or remove the c:\user\User directory.

I followed the multiple suggestions from Brink and others:
    • Rebooted at least 6 times
    • Enabled hidden Administrator
    • Booted into Safe Mode
    • Changed ProfileImagePath
    • Tried to rename c:\users\User but couldn't because a file was still in use
    • Copied all data from c:\users\User.000 into c:\users\User
    • Rebooted and had temporary profile
    • Followed steps in Brink tutorial to change ImageProfilePath; rebooted with no change
    • Restored using Restore Point from before Update 1909 - returned to single profile state (User.000)
    • Removed each update that was installed individually and rebooted after each update removal - profile state never changed
    • After all updates were removed, repeated the steps above with hidden Administrator, changing profile, etc. - same issue with file in use in c:\users\User
    • Followed all steps above with hidden Administrator but without copying files from User.000 to User - same results

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

    Cumulative updates - April 14 2020

Thanks for this... but I have done the following cumulative updates on my PC. ver 1909 on 2019-07-05 Currently at Build
    18363.815

My PC now has some glitches on startup, but it still works.

    KB4541335 20 03 28

    KB4549951 20 04 15 and

    KB4550945 20 04 21

Update problems have not been reported because customers cannot boot their computers after KB4549951.

Your link also does not explain the relationship between Win10 ver 1903 and Win10 ver 1909. Is one for the laptop or server?

I haven't done the updates on my laptop yet which is at Build
    18363.752.

Do we all stop MS updates for 7 days or 14 days until MS fixes this obvious update problem. Or do we use the Media Creation Tool 1909?

    Please advise!

    April 14, 2020—KB4549951 (OS Builds 18362.778 and 18363.778)

    NEW

IMPORTANT We have been evaluating the public health situation, and we understand this is impacting our customers. In response to these challenges, we are prioritizing our focus on security updates. Starting in May 2020, we are pausing all optional
non-security releases (C and D updates) for all the supported versions of Windows client and server products (Windows 10, version 1909 down to Windows Server 2008 SP2).

There is no change to the monthly security updates (B release – Update Tuesday); these will continue as planned to ensure business continuity and to keep our customers protected and productive.

What's new for Windows 10, version 1909 and Windows 10, version 1903 release notes

Windows 10, versions 1903 and 1909 share a common core operating system and an identical set of system files. As a result, the new features in Windows 10, version 1909 were included in the recent monthly quality update for Windows
10, version 1903 (released October 8, 2019), but are currently in a dormant state. These new features will remain dormant until they are turned on using an
enablement package, which is a small, quick-to-install “master switch” that simply activates the Windows 10, version 1909 features.

To reflect this change, the release notes for Windows 10, version 1903 and Windows 10, version 1909 will share an update history page. Each release page will contain a list of addressed issues for both 1903 and 1909 versions.
Note that the 1909 version will always contain the fixes for 1903; however, 1903 will not contain the fixes for 1909. This page will provide you with the build numbers for both 1909 and 1903 versions so that it will be easier for support to assist you if you
    encounter issues.

For more details about the enablement package and how to get the feature update, see the
Windows 10, version 1909 delivery options blog.
