Windows 10: Sound issues with Windows 10

I have my laptop plugged into my TV via HDMI for gaming. I've done this for years without issues. Lately, Windows is automatically changing the sound setting to 7.1 as soon as I launch a game, which causes the audio in my games to be completely ruined. All the dialogue sounds like it's underwater. If I shift+tab out of the game and change the setting back to either stereo or 5.1, as soon as I re-enter the game Windows changes the setting back to 7.1. I've disabled all of the "spatial settings" in the sound settings tab, and I've made the TV the default device. I've restarted the computer with
