Windows 10: sound not working on computer

The sound is not working on my computer HP 2011x. The speakers are on but there is a red x on the bottom right of my screen. Earlier it was not working and I had a diagnostic run and was told there were no speakers or headphones plugged in. This is not the problem. The sound then did come on, but a few hours later there is no sound and the red x is showing up again.

Is there some way to fix this?

Good surround sound headset

I know you say you're not that guy, but stepping into the $250+ range really brings a change in build quality that might have you never having to buy another set. Otherwise, getting 6 speakers with decent sound in a headset is hard, and that's what you are asking for, and I have no suggestions, but just a bump up the list. *Stick Out Tongue
