Windows 10: Sound Plays Fine, But Sound Slider and Windows Sounds Don't Make Any Noise

The issue: I can't test my sound volume anymore. The sound from the speakers works just fine. I can watch Youtube videos, play Spotify, whatever: the sound plays just fine. However, if I try to use the actual volume slider, it won't make any noise whatsoever. No "ding", nothing. It seems that every application except for Windows emits sound from my speakers.


So they're just not working in that specific menu. The volume slider won't "ding" and is totally unhelpful at the moment.

Very weird problem here! I had an issue with my Afterglow Prismatic microphone, where it simply stopped working and even starting just completely vanishing (not being hidden, not being disabled, *vanishing*) off of my recording devices list. I plug in my
Afterglow transmitter, both the playback and recording devices show up on the list, and then after around 10 seconds they vanish.

I haven't been able to fix this, but re-installing my Xonar sound drivers caused another problem. This problem is a Windows 10 problem, specifically, I believe.

The issue: I can't test my sound volume anymore. Again, sound works just fine. I can play games, Youtube videos, whatever: the sound plays just fine. However, if I try to use the actual volume slider, it won't make any noise whatsoever. No "ding", nothing.
I also went over to sounds and restore it to default... Doesn't work, and trying to test any of the sounds in that menu don't work. However, if I open the actual folder and manually test the sound with VLC media player, they work.

So they're just not working in that specific menu. The volume slider won't "ding" and is totally unhelpful at the moment.

I've tried:

- resetting sounds to default

- trying switching playback devices - no effect

- restoring my system to 9 days back, when this wasn't a problem: no effect (?!?)

- restarting over and over

- safe mode

I really need this to work. I play games, I make audio, I work on game development. This is really annoying.

This would only change my output device. The correct device is selected and is working. It is only the test "ding" and sounds played within the Sound application itself that is experiencing the problem. Therefore I am unable to use the volume slider
to test the actual volume. Otherwise sound is working fine.

As before, this is not a solution to the problem. It is not a matter of choosing the correct device, see my descriptions above. I know entirely which device does which. The devices are playing sound and functioning properly. It is only sound as it specifically
relates to the volume slider and sound effects, making me unable to use the slider to determine the level of sound.

The problem is with these specific aspects of the volume application itself.
