Windows 10: sounds for toggle keys

I usually have sounds enabled for Num Lock and Caps Lock. After the last Windows updates, these no longer work. The image above shows they are activated. If I hold the Num Lock key down for 5 secs I get a squirt-like sound and the toggle is turned off. If I hold it down again for 5 secs I get a beep and the Toggle Keys dialogue appears, but I get no sounds after pressing Yes. What do I have to do to get the sounds back?

To Turn On or Off Toggle Keys Tone

As you have an issue with sound on toggle keys, I suggest you to change the toggle keys settings
and check.

Steps:

• Press Windows key from keyboard and type
  Toggle.
• Select Hear a tone while pressing Caps lock, Num lock and Scroll lock.
• Under Toggle keys, change the settings and check.

If the issue still persists, Run troubleshooter from
Fix sound problems and check.

Toggle keys on but no sound

I too had this problem recently, probably caused by a Realtek driver or Windows update - or both - and the solution offered by KevinN worked but I wanted to know why

The real culprit is the Spacial Sound (Windows Sonic for Headphones) utility, when this is off the toggle keys sound works properly but when it's set to on the toggle key sound is anaemic and barely audible.

So the reason Kevin's solution works is that setting sound to mono disables the spacial sound feature and when mono is then turned off the spacial sound is enabled again but, crucially, it is set to off and the toggle key sound continues to work properly.
