Speedup Booting: Large Amount of Hard Disk (Read/Write) Head Thrashing: SSD Caching

I have been noticing for sometime now, a large amount of head thrashing.

After installing a hard drive light indicator (Activity Indicator) on a laptop, I am noticing there is a huge amounts of create, change, delete on the boot drive.

It won't be much of a problem except it slows down boot up.

I added a SSD and use a SSD caching software. Using SSD to install Windows on is such a horrible idea. Initially it sounds good, but Windows does huge amounts of R/W on the SSD it will wear out in about 6 months or less, depending on use.

You might want to moves thing like System Protection, Temp Files, ProgramData, PageFile, LocalData to a second "Utility" or "Support" drive. Distributed to minimize head thrashing and increase bootup and system performance.

You also need to think of contingencies/fallback/fail-safes.

It might only be my opinion but Windows really needs to include SSD caching support. The speed increase in bootup is significant. It shouldn't even require mentioning. Focused on preventing files that are frequently changed from being cached (wasting write cycles).

I hope this was a useful feedback.

    :)

Installing an SSD drive on my desktop to use as the C bootup drive

What are you talking about, I have Samsung 830 for 5 years and its still running great there is no issue with NTFS and SSD

To the OP all you have to do is use Macrium Reflect to clone your disk to your SSD you'll have to option to shrink your C partition before you start the actual clone check out this video
it walks you through step by step

  3. Disable Disk Write Caching on SSD in Windows 10

    Not true.

Write caching is there to defer disk writes until later.

Why write blocks to disk if a program might change that block, forcing it to be written to disk yet again?
Why write blocks to disk now if the filesystem is busy with other tasks?
    Just cache the blocks.
And keep them cached so that if they're needed again they can be read from cache rather than from disk.

Caching reduces the overhead. But it makes the system vulnerable to data loss if power is abruptly lost before the cached blocks can be written to disk.

The risk is small, so we almost always keep disk caching turned on.

How To Format A Write Protected Flash Memory ?

    ¿You already tried this one?...

    Run CMD

    1. diskpart
    2. list disk

Then in the 3º step, put the correct number of disk in the list for the usb flash (if it's listed in disk 3, then you'll have to write select disk 3).

    2. select disk #
    3. clean
    4. create partition primary
    5. select partition 1
    6. active
    7. format fs=fat32
    8. assign
    9. exit

with that commands you will format the flash drive in fat32, if you have a large drive you can select also "format fs=ntfs" in step 7.

    good luck!
