  1. SpinRite won't work.

I'm sure that my hard disk has faults.

The system was upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.

SpinRite can't scan what it finds on the C drive.

There are hidden folders which might be the problem. I have a screenshot of the drive contents with and without the hidden holders.

Can anyone suggest what I might do so that SpinRite can work?

  2. Won't successfully boot my SpinRite CD, so is FreeDOS incompatibile? But flash drive with FreeDOS runs fine. Also S.M.A.R.T. info in final Replies.

I mentioned in my other similar Question about SpinRite that my making a USB drive had made SpinRite work with the FreeDOS on it with the same settings that GRC had me make in my BIOS even though I'd not been able to run a CD of SpinRite that works on my
    other two XP machines.

I can't imagine what the difference is.

SpinRite tech had given up almost immediately on FreeDOS and had told me to make a new CD on my XP and have it make it a bootable MS-DOS instead of FreeDOS.

But magically, when I made it on the USB flash drive, it worked. I wonder if their program could have made in on a flash drive for me instead of my using some freeware rufus_v1.2.0 that I found to do it with? I'd picked Rufus since when I Googled it, I'd
found that it could make bootables with either MS-DOS or FreeDOS. But I accidentally must have made mine with FreeDOS and boy was I surprised when it showed me that when it booted but then it actually kept going and I could just type
spinrite and it started running it. That's what the images and info in some of my Replies above about S.M.A.R.T. are about.

Do I need to reset anything in the BIOS after running SpinRite so that Windows will run properly or should I leave the BIOS the same for both?

  3. N95 - Recover deleted files

try spinrite at www.grc.com/spinrite. its a bit pricey, but a lot of people tell me it can recover your data safely from your failed hard drive. i would recommend it.

  8. SpinRite won't work.

I hadn't, but I just did. No report or log has appeared after the computer rebooted.

  10. Josey, I found the log which I will attach.

Samuria, it's v6.0 I will have to boot from it again so that I can write down what it says.

I don't know of any recent alternative to SpinRite, but it is rather an old utility. GRC

It is a DOS 32-bit program, designed for IDE & SCSI hard drives, that I think was last updated in 2004 by author Steve Gibson, to v6.0 in order to access NTFS drives. Hard drives in the XP era were smaller in data capacity by a degree of magnitude and slower in operation than today's HDDs.

On the basis that all Hard disk drive media has fundamental storage defects, SpinRite corrects data errors on a statistical basis and rewrites the data to provide effective defect management on the disk's surface by finding weak areas on the disk and marking them as defects, which the manufacturers disk firmware may not be as effective with.

v5.0 will not work on NTFS formatted drives.

Apparently, in an example on the GRC website, an 80GB drive took 22h to complete the process of repair, so a larger modern drive may take a long time.

First, check that the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive shows no obvious problems. One program that will give you a detailed report on the disk health is SpeedFan:

Download SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

This is the link Speedfan 4.52 you should click, not the banner with the big "Download" on it!

Once installed and running, select the S.M.A.R.T. tab, then your HDD from the drop down list, and see the results.
Fitness and Performance bars are good indicators whether the disk has problems, and you can perform an in depth analysis online from another button, provided by HDDStatus.com:

This site can perform analysis, store results for historical analysis and offer advisories if there are notable performance variations.

That should allay your fears, or confirm that your disk may have problems. Your chkdisk only showed correctable data problems, thankfully.

  12. Samuria, it says:

    Select Drives and Partitions
    ***********************

    Dos A: Undetermined Format

    Drive 0 Add-On Controller

Part 1 MBR followed by EFI

I've tried messing about with it but it balks at everything I try to do. I can't make screenshots. I tried photographing the screen but that's hopeless.

  13. SpinRite won't work.

Hello Fafhrd, I didn't see your post until I had uploaded my last one.

I will try that within the next few minutes.

Hi Syncopator, it looks like SpinRite may not recognise EFI GPT partitions You may need to go to GRC.com to check that.

  15. That may be so Fafhrd but I don't have the patience to struggle with recalcitrant software. As far as I can see SpinRite won't work on this computer.

I was made aware of SpeedFan some years ago but I never gave it much attention. Its S.M.A.R.T. function's Status says no error, both Value and Worst columns have identical values, and the Fitness and Performance bars are both all blue.

That's all very well I suppose, but a few months back I ran Memtest86 which gave some very worrying results. I consulted a local IT specialist. They did some checks said that the hard disk had very serious problems and should be replaced with some urgency.

    I'm rather confused now.

addendum: HddStatus is far beyond me I'm afraid.
