    spontaneous encryption of MANY files...


    This is the most nefarious and upsetting experience I have had with Windows 10, to date. I noticed today 8/15/20 that a directory containing all types of files have suddenly become encrypted. I noticed that I could not access more and more files. I checked file properties and saw that "encrypt contents to secure data" was checked. I did not do this, never saw any windows 10 setting associated with encryption never experimented with it, etc etc.


    I tried to de-select this setting and it worked for several files, that is, it removed encryption, then it stopped working and responds with "The specified file could not be decrypted".

    When I select a file, and properties, then select "Advanced" under the GENERAL tab, I see dialog box with "users who can access this file" window and it lists my user name along with a "certificate thumbprint" that is 40 hex characters long. Below that box is another section that indicates "Recovery certificates for this file as defined by recovery policy:". And this one is blank.


    So far, I have observed this in "only" one of my WORK directories - containing 52,611 files 51.3GB of encrypted data. PLEASE don't tell me that this data is lost to me.


    I am now terrified whenever I turn on my computer.


    Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

    Hi Iman,

    Error message 0x80071771 means that you need to restore the file encryption key in order for you to decrypt the encrypted files. On the other hand, you can still try these steps and see if it will work:

    • Right-click the file or folder that you want to decrypt.
    • Click File ownership and click Personal.

    Windows XP file encryption

    My suggestion to you is to look into what kind of encryption the program used, and look for a way to break that type of encryption. Sorry I can't say a specific program for sure.
