Windows 10: SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 (KB3045305) fails to install...

...every day for the last number of years. Should I do something about it?

Windows 10, SQL Server 2008 update KB3045305 refuses to go away

When I updated to windows 10 from windows 7, I had a running copy of SQL Server 2008. Then KB3045305 hit my update queue.

The problem is that KB3045305 takes over my system for about 5 minutes of stressful disk access and process utilization every night before halting with a compatibility error, severely stressing my hardware (CPU and disk temps peak). It would have been
great if they had made the compatibility check before this happened.

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Security Update for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 (KB3045305).

I googled the problem and found Microsoft doesn't support SQL Server 2008 on Windows 10.

OK, that was fine, I decided to remove SQL2008 from my system.

For some reason, the standard uninstall did not remove all traces of SQL2008 from my system, and KB3045305 kept reappearing. Although there are still traces of 2008 on my system, I cannot uninstall it further, and any attempts invoke the 2008 Configuration
Manager, which refuses to perform any actions because it fails the compatibility check.

Unlike previous versions of windows, I have no control over the items in the update queue, and I can't tell it to ignore that update. I tried removing "Microsoft Server 2008 Support Files" from the installed program list, but every day the update process
re-installs it and repeats the update.

How can I remove KB3045305 from my system?

Do you know if you need SQL Server 2008 on your computer? What software you have installed that uses it? Maybe you can just uninstall it.



A common use of SQL Server 2008 on end-user computers is as database of Business Contact Manager (BCM). Do you use BCM?

To uninstall SQL Server go to Control Panel -> Programs -> Uninstall a program -> Select or double click on “Microsoft SQL Server 2008” -> Click on “Remove”.
