Windows 10: SSD install on Lenovo Flex 3-1570

I've run into a quagmire and need some help.

I purchased a Lenovo Flex3-1570 and a Crucial MX200 250GB SSD to upgrade to. I've had nothing but fits trying to get this SSD running.

1. The SSD is recognized in the bios
2. The SSD is not seen by windows 10 installer (fresh install)
3. Can't clone drive due to 512/4000 sector size mismatch. (tried macrium, acronis, minitool partition wizard)

I've tried the following steps to try to resolve the issue.

1. Boot from legacy instead of UEFI
2. initialized SSD on another PC
3. ran diskpart "clean" command on SSD
4. Installed IRST SATA driver during windows installation

In trying to resolve this issue i've decided all "support" departments should be renamed "not my problem" departments......seriously a joke.

The only thing i can think of is that it is some sort of SSD DEVSLP (DevSlp - Wikipedia) issue and the SSD is being put to sleep after the bios loads and before windows setup loads, but I can't get anyone at Lenovo to confirm this is the problem.

I've run across multiple posts online about similar issues but all were resolved by initializing the drive or fixing a corrupted MBR with the diskpart "clean" command.

Hoping someone here can maybe help shed some light on the issue and help to resolve it, even if it means getting a different model SSD that will work with this laptop.

Touchpad Issues with Windows 10

Michael, I have the same lenovo (Flex 3 1570) that I swapped out the 5400 rpm hard drive for an SSD. The pause on this machine is around 1 second. If the pause occurs when using the touchscreen, it also zooms in. The mouse pause happens with a MS Bluetooth
Mouse 5000 or the touch pad on the machine.

Did you open a trouble ticket on this? MS engineers will not see these posts.

Thank you for working on this. Lets hope MS or lenovo fix this soon.

Have you tried completely imaging the old disk and restoring the image to the SSD? A very different thing from cloning.

 

Thought of that too. Going from a 1TB HDD to a 250GB SSD so the partitions need resized and windows can only shrink the C:\ down to 440GB.

 

Macrium can certainly handle an on the fly resize of the OS partition, I've done it twice already. However, you can't fit more than 250 GB on a 250 GB SSD and you really don't want to fill an SSD past 50-75% unnecessarily.

What is total size of your data consumption of old disk?

It's a brand new laptop, no data on it at all yet, will deal with migration after I get the SSD running. I'll try to get the partition resized and image it tomorrow morning & give you an update.

 

You have to migrate the OS to SSD first to get it to run.

 

OK, well, you say Windows won't recognize the SSD but your BIOS will. So, I'm suggesting to restore a Macrium complete disk image to the SSD rather than the cloning you attempted and suggesting that will "get the SSD running".

As I said earlier, with a Macrium restore you can do the partition resizing on the fly, i.e., as part of setting up the restore.

You have to format the entire disk as NTFS first. You only have 128MB (not GB) unformatted space there. The rest of the storage space is unallocated.
And why restore? You should have a running OS on the SSD first before you can do a restore if you are trying to fix an issue. If you are planning to migrate to SSD, you should use OS Migration Tool or Cloning tool (which is also one feature of the Macrium).

 

How are you connecting the target drive? USB enclosure? You might want to have a look at this article: http://knowledgebase.macrium.com/dis...ted?src=search
The implication might be that, if you're using a USB enclosure, you might have better luck with a simple USB/SATA adapter cable.

P.S. not ignoring you @badrobot, I was interrupted while composing and didn't see your response until I pulled the trigger.

 

Target drive is connected via USB/SATA adapter cable, not enclosure.
@badrobot the whole point of restoring an image to the disk is that I can't install the OS to the SSD while installed in the laptop. Also, how does formatting the entire disk fix a sector size mismatch error?
