SSD not detected in Win10 install but is detected in bios

    Hi all,

This is my first build and I am so close yet it feels so far away. I'm at the final step of installing Windows 10 onto my PC I have a bootable USB drive connected and everything goes smoothly until I have to select a hard drive!

I have a Mushkin Enhanced Reactor 2.5" 1Tb with a Asus ROG Maximus VIII Hero LGA 1151 intel z170. As you can see from the photos below, the ssd is detected in the bios but not in the hard drive. I'm booting it with UEFI USB priority. It's a clean ssd do I have to reformat it?

I am not sure whether drive 0 Unallocated space is my ssd but it also says it has 0 free space. I am super confused please help!

    Thanks!

    Hi Joshua,

    In response to your questions:

    • How are you connecting your eMMC drive to your computer? the drive came with the laptop and is embedded on the motherboard by the manufacturer.
    • What is the make and model of your laptop? HP Notebook 14-an012nr

    Welcome to the TenForums @Roketmann

If this is a brand new drive it needs to be initialized. Click the word "New" in the screen shot you provided. It will then want to create a partition.

You should then be able to install windows, it will tell you that it will create additional partitions.

Not sure what your strategy is for using 1TB. Are you going to have boot partition (windows will create some small ones it needs) and data drive(s) or one large C:drive

    Thanks!

It's going to be my main hard drive so it will be C drive so probably creating small partitions. My problem is a) I'm not sure if what it detected was my hard drive or not b) I tried hitting new but as you can see from the screen shot it has 0 storage and 0 usable space.

I have read elsewhere that a lot of SSD comes blank and requires formatting before I plug it in. In addition, I will need to change CSM settings. It's my first build so I'm not sure. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

On your first Screen Shot......did you click on the Show Details? if so what did it say.....

I have never had a problem installing the OS to a new SSD; windows 10 will know that it is an SSD and format it correctly.....

Hopefully you do not have a DOA drive.....

  7. Do you have another machine where you can test drive. You are correct before it can be used it needs to be initialized and formatted. Windows will handle this activity as part of the initial install. Building on @kipper idea, if you can plug into another system you could initialize and partition. You would do this in disk management.

Do you have secure boot disabled on BIOS. In reading your manual CSM set it to Auto.

Clean install instructions. What file system are you using on USB boot device?

Not a bad idea to disconnect all drives that are going to have an OS installed on.......just in case you accidentally hit format, delete, etc......
