    Hi guys,

Quite often my C: drive is used 100% blocking the system for tens of seconds up to few minutes.
Any idea what could cause this?

I've tried turning off the antivirus, firefox... same thing.

    Thanks!

    Need Info About Superfetch

    Hi Tex,

My system is an SSD for OS and Applications and a HDD for my data.

That is just Internet rumour, logically if that process is not accessing your SSD all the time, it has to be good for your SSD, due to the reduction in read/write cycles to your SSD.

My SSD is 4 years old and still at 100% health when checked . . .

    SSD processed 100%

I would look into the 100% disk activity a little more and try and find what is using the disk. In Task Manager on the process tab you can view the entries in sort order according to disk activity with highest at the top. This view will tell you what is causing the read/write activity as you can see from mine below:

Ye-ye, but you see... when that process, if any, is overusing the drive, Windows freeze. So i can not see what happens there. *Smile

Hi, having read a few reports found with a search on "100% disk activity, low cpu use" - from Win 8 onwards, I suggest:

    a. disable readyboost if in use
    b. disable defragmentation
    c. try changing the power plan from balanced to high performance
    d. if you use Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology try updating it- see:
    100% Disk Usage - Page 4
    e. Windows Defender may be active whilst disk use is high.
    f. "I had this issue and it seems some others encountered the bug. What fixed it for me is going to settings, system, notifications, and turning off "show me tips about Windows." I believe that was the one causing problems, though I turned all of them off besides the app notifications. System processes went back down after a restart and haven't spiked since."

These are things people have reported have had an effect. However, this doesn't necessarily identify an exact cause, so is unsatisfactory.

Analysis: run a capture using Sysinternals Procmon.
I suggest you take the time to use the filter to filter out all background tasks when idle, so then the capture may show less extraneous info.
Or you could set up the capture to only include disk read/write ...
Put another way, there will be LOTS recorded if you don't use a filter... on the other hand, if you get a prolonged burst of one kind of activity as you may, and you know when to look, that might be easy to find.

(Presumably your SSD is configured to use AHCI not IDE)

Another think you might try is to download and install ProcessTamer (free).
That may give you sthg to work with..

System and compressed memory slowing down disk operation Solved - Windows 10 Forums
    Symptoms:

System and compressed memory slowing down disk operation

System and compressed memory process was doing a lot of read and write on the disk.

I was told to disable and stop running the Windows Services called "Superfetch" and "Windows Search" while it seems to have worked perfectly for many, it hasn't for me. I still have 100% disk usage and a very loud constant fan.

Windows 10 high Disk usage (100%) I've seen a thread here explaining how to fix it but I seem to have lost it... : techsupport
