  1. SSD Trimming of Dynamic Disks

Recently i've had a drive failure and that enabled me to buy a new disk for replacement this time an SSD!.
After copying the file from the damaged disk and doing running some repair utilities DISM restorehealth and SFC the machine booted. At that time i've noticed a big mistake: I had forgotten to put the partition on their proper places, so I couldn't extend my data partition!
Because of the nature of disk operations with software like GParted or it's paid alternatives I didn't want to "move partitions" around and a friend recommended using some software RAID solution that was available in both systems linux/windows.

This meant the legacy Dynamic Disks, i like lvm but isn't supported on the win-world and i would have liked to try Storage Spaces but that isn't supported on linux. The venerable Dynamic Disks were my only solution for a reliable way to add and resize partitions easily in the new disk.

Today I noticed a failure on the event log related to disk optimization, a bit of research later i found that Dynamic Disks don't support TRIM. Inside the linux system fstrim seems to run fine on the partition so i __have__ the possibility of rebooting every now and then for mantaining the health of my disk. But it's not a very nice option tbh.

I'm also not unable to undo the convertion to dynamic disk at least with the tools i have available. Nor i have sufficient storage for backuping and starting again i bought this disk because of hardware failures with the previous one.

tl;dr: My situation lured me into enabling Dynamic Disks. Now my only option to doing TRIMming of the filesystem is unsupported softrware on a linux installation. Is there a plan for converting back into basic disks that doesn't require moving everything into a different disk? I have enough space to temporarily have two copies of the data in the disk. Is there a roadmap for support of TRIM in legacy dynamic disks?

    :)

  3. Windows does not Trim SSD on schedule

As I understand, optimization is either defrag (HD) or trim (SSD), depending on the disk type. And if I understand Trim, it does not operate independently of the O/S; garbage collection is done sporadically without assist of the O/S, but Trim must be operated
through the O/S. And, again, if I understand, Trim and garbage collection are not the same thing. If Trim was not able to be scheduled or if Trim did not need to be scheduled, then Microsoft would not have included it in their Optimization Center for SSDs.
But Microsoft did include it, and appears to not be running it for SSDs even when included in a schedule.

I was asking why this was so, and if there was a solution to it.

As Microsoft appears to have no solution, I will look for a third-party Trim that can be scheduled outside of the Optimization Center.

    Thx. ITG
