Windows 10: Start and Search Not Working on Windows 10

As of this evening, both the Start menu and the Search box on the Win 10 taskbar on my computer have stopped working:

• When I click the Start icon, the mouse pointer turns into a circle for a fraction of a second, then returns to an arrow, but nothing else seems to happen.
• When I click the Search box, nothing happens.
• The Windows key by itself does nothing. Win+R does bring up the run dialog box

I've tried rebooting the computer, shutting down Windows Explorer and restarting, running sfc, and updating the system, none of which have changed the problem. I'm on a Lenovo T450, if that makes a difference.

Method 1:

I suggest you to run the search and indexing troubleshooter.

Follow the below steps:

  Right click on the Start button and click on
  Control Panel.
  
• 
  Click on the Indexing Options.
  
• 
  Click on the Troubleshoot search and indexing.
  

If the issue persists then follow the below method.

Method 2:

I suggest you to start the Windows Search Service.

Follow the below steps:

    Press Windows key + R from the Keyboard.
    
  • 
    Type services.msc and hit Enter.
    
  • 
    Search for Windows Search.
    
  • 
    Double click on Windows Search and click on
    Start button.
    
  • 
    Click on the dropdown list and set the Startup type to
    Automatic.
    

If the issue persists then follow the below method.

Method 3:

I suggest you to manually select the location in the Indexing options and check.

Follow the below steps:

  Right click on the Start button and select
  Control Panel.
  
• 
  Click on Indexing Options and click on
  Modify button.
  
• 
  Under Change selected locations check mark all the locations.
  
• 
  Click on Ok and check if it works.

Search service not working (windows 10 pro)

My search service does not work at all - the reason seems to be "wrong data directory permissions". I tried all of the above methods without success.

Metro 2033 fails to work on windows 10!

I don't recall you mentioning any trouble shooting steps attempted though. At the very least, doing a quick search and checking threads like this very well may have solved it for you. It's listed as compatible on MS' list of games that work with W10 for a reason, because many if not most are able to get it running on W10. At least some level of workaround may be required, but some got it running without doing anything.
