Windows 10: START button on the task bar is not working.

This happened this evening. No updates were running in background. I was surfing internet on Microsoft Edge and then suddenly found that Windows START button was not responding. All other buttons of the taskbar are responding as it is. I did a restart but that didn't help either. What's the solution? I am not enrolled in Insider preview program and i have the latest 2004 version installed. The version got updated a week ago.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my query. But unfortunately this has not helped. Let me give you some more information on this.

I had tried all the remedies that you can find when you type in "Windows 10 start button is not working' in bing or google... ie. powershell.. safe boot etc.. non of them worked and then I wrote to the window community.

I have tried all the steps you have told me to do, but it has not helped me as the start button still does not work. also the window store icon and mail icon in the task bar is also invisible and only when I put the cursor on those it only shows the name
i.e store or Mail. They are also not working when click them.

I am really in trouble as I can not use the start button as I should be able to.

PLEASE HELP... When would Microsoft have an remedy for this....

I understand your concern and will assist you to resolve this issue.

I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it helps.

Step1: End Task the Windows Explorer.

• 
  Open task manager (CRTL+SHIFT+ESC)
  
• 
  Right-click on windows explorer
  
• 
  End task (Note: don’t close Task manager)
  
• 
  Click on File > Run new task
  
• 
  Type explorer.exe and press enter
  
• 
  Your search bar should be functional again.
  

Step 2: If Start button is not working then I suggest you to check for the latest updates.

• 
  Press Windows logo key +R, enter
  MS-settings: and then press OK. This opens Settings.
  
• 
  In Settings, go to Update & security >
  Windows Update, and then select Check for updates. Install any available updates and restart your PC if required.
  

Step 3: Some problems can be fixed by signing out of your account and then signing back in. Press Ctrl + Alt+ Delete and select
Sign out. Once you’ve signed out, sign back in to your account.

Start button + task bar not working


Hi,

Got my Win 10 at the lauch day and have been enjoying it until I decided to do some clean up. I ran Ccleaner and Puran utilities reg cleaning tools. After that the start button and task bar became unresponsive.

I tried to google the issue and found out a sort of a solution, but it's not good enough to be permanent. This was that fix:

1. Right click on the Start Menu button and open Command Prompt (Admin)
2. Enter PowerShell in the command line
3. Paste the following line in the Administrator: PowerShell Window:
   • Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}
4. Wait for the PowerShell to execute the command (ignore a few red error codes).

The problem with this is that I need to do this everytime I boot the computer, so it doesn't fix it permanently.

I'm also having problems with updates which seems to be failing everytime. I was hoping the updates would fix the first problem, but since the updates won't istall, I can't know if they would.

I tried to refresh the windows without affecting my files, but that failed to complete.

So now I'm thinking about fully resetting the install, but since I don't have external hard drive, I wouldn't want to go that far with this.

So I was wondering if anyone else has struggled with tha same issue and would found a way to fix this without fully resetting the system?
