Windows 10: Start menu and Windows apps not working

    This issue started a few days ago and the more I use my laptop, the more issues I find somehow.

    First, my start menu won't stay open and I can't click on anything in it either. Some things aren't clickable in my search menu either (left click won't work but right click does).

    I also can't open pictures with the built-in Photos app, it just say it can't open the image, whichever image it is (and my files are fine). Same with the Films and TV app, it gives an error code whenever I try to read a video of any kind (0x80004003).

    When I want to change my background, clicking the Browse button doesn't do anything.

    I tried sfc /scannnow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth as someone requested but it says everything's fine.

    Avast (free version) and ccleaner say everything's fine as well.

    I didn't download or install anything lately, apart from updating Genshin Impact on Monday or Tuesday (tried removing the game from my computer but didn't fix any issue).

    I tried rebooting my graphic cards, restarting the file explorer, reinstalling the Photos and Films and TV apps; still nothing. Booting in Safe Mode also keeps the issues.

    I got told to create a new user account and set it as admin to see if the issue persists on a different user's session: I got the error oobesettingsmultipage while trying to boot the session for the first time, so it was far from successful.

    Last but not least, I tried to go back to a previous version of Windows 10, but the option doesn't appear at all in my settings. I tried to do it from the BIOS, but it didn't work (says an error occured). My Windows 10 version is up to date as of now.

    So I was told to simply reset my PC, which I obviously don't want to do (won't have the tools to backup my files before next week anyway), but I'll end up doing it if I can't find any solutions. I just wanted to try asking here first, just in case.

    If anyone out there has an idea, please let me know. I got my laptop on Christmas, and back then I had already encountered issues with Cortana and the search bar, which I could fix easily.

    I suggest you to follow the below methods and check if it helps.

    Method 1: I suggest you to follow below steps and check.

    Step 1: I suggest you to install all the latest pending Windows updates as below and check if it helps.

    • Go to “settings” and click on “update and security”.
    • Under tab “Windows update”, click on the icon “check for updates”.
    • Then once you find the pending updates install it and check.

    Step 2: I suggest you to run the app troubleshooter from the below article and check if it helps.

    Start menu is not working on Windows 10

    Hi,

    Iunderstand the frustration if things are not working fine as expected.

    Please help us with below details,


            • When you say "If I sign in under my user name I am in some earlier version", which version you are referring to?

            • Did you made any recent changes to your computer prior to the issue?

            • When you say “I cannot access the start menu and am limited to IP as a browser” Is it refers to Microsoft Edge?

    As an initial steps, I suggest you to check for the Windows version. To do so, follow the below steps:

    1) Login to your computer through user name on which it show earlier version of Windows.

    2) Press Windows key + r.

    3) Type winver, hit enter.
