Windows 10: start menu error morphed into bigger screen blinking nightmare

Hello,Today, I went to click on my start menu and a little box popped up saying: Critical Error, your start menu isn't working. The computer worked fine, basically, it's just that I couldn't access the start button and that annoying little box wouldn't go away.I tried a few things on the windows forums to fix the start menu issue, but nothing seemed to help, so I figured maybe I was missing an update. I went into the system settings, clicked "check for updates" and installed the latest update not sure what it was, and rebooted my machine. That was a huge mistake!!! Now, my computer is a nig

Right-click on shortcuts and .exe's causes screen to blink + no menu


Hi - Bizzarro problem with Windows 10. Help appreciated!

In any account, including Administrator ones AND the Administrator account:

• If I right-click a desktop shortcut, the screen blinks black. No sign of the context menu.
• If I locate an .exe in its folder and right-click that, the screen blinks black. The folder closes. No context menu.

Related, perhaps:

• In a Standard account, if I try to turn down the UAC settings (so my son can use Steam without me logging him in each time), the Windows accepts my administrator password, then ignores my changes.

Notes

• I have recorded the blink and played it back frame by frame. No message or anything appears. The screen merely goes black.
• Windows 10 otherwise seems to work fine.
• I have done virus scans etc.

All this makes it very hard to set up Standard accounts that are any use. Any help would be appreciated.

I installed Windows 10 - seemed to go fine - Windows 10 initial screen and sign on page worked fine - after signing in get what appears to be my old Windows 8.1 start screen that blinks on and off - Suggestions to go to Device Manager or Start Menu or some
other place are not useful as cursor and screen blink and do not let me go anywhere else.

Curiously though, hitting F1 does bring up Edge which works fine.

Thank you for your assistance. Please see the answers to your questions below:

1. Compaq CQ2024PC

2. Windows Update

3. No error message or code on screen.

4. As soon as the update was finished.

5. No changes were made prior to issues.

I also can not use the methods listed (Run the SDC or update the drivers) due to the blinking. As soon as I attempt to access any portion of the screen, start menu, program listing or files on the computer the system starts going into the endless loop and
the screen continues to blink.
