Windows 10: Start Menu Icon for External Hard Drive Locked in Position. Cannot Drag and Drop All Other...

As the title says, one particular icon Mothership D which represents an external HDD connected by USB, refuses to move. I've tried restarting the PC, removing it and readding it, the left click drag + escp in file explorer thing. It's really annoying to me because of the inability to alphabetize. Permissions look good, I cleaned the registry, drivers are up to date. Honestly baffled.

Windows 10 - Start Menu Drag & Drop Icons

I am running Wndows 10 on HP All in One PC and until last weekend all was well. Now I cannot drap and drop icons in the start menu. If I try to drag it to a different location on the Start Menu it disappears but the program shows it being stilled pinned
to the Start Menu. If I Unpin and repin and then restart the computer the icon reappears in a different location. Any suggestion as to how to resolve this? I tried recovery at an earlier point but that did not succeed.

 

Drag and Drop

Hi Charles,

the steps you suggested didn't work for me but, when pressing the escape key it somehow expanded the drive and by using drag and drop to the single file in the list worked.

In the past I could drag and drop multiple folders onto the drive on the network computer(s). Doing it on individual folders will take far too long and time consuming and is not an option.

Microsoft should be able to identify what is blocking it and issue a fix.

My machine is multi boot so tomorrow I will try with Windows 7.

External hard drive

Why you're experiencing this kind of issue can be due to a variety of reasons.

Having said that, please provide the following for us to be able to learn more about your concern:

• Have you tried accessing the same external hard drive on a different Windows 10 PC? If yes, what is the result?
  
• Have you tried plugging a different external hard drive or other external drives like flash drive and SD card? If yes, did you get the same result?
  
• What are the troubleshooting steps you've already done?
  

In the meantime, running the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter finds and repairs problems with your devices and hardware. Here's how to run the
Hardware and Devices troubleshooter:

• Right-click the Start icon, then select Control Panel.
  
• Choose the Large icons option from the View by drop down list found on the upper-right part of the Control Panel window.
  
• Locate then select Troubleshooting.
  
• Click View all from the left pane.
  
• Locate and click Hardware and Devices to run the troubleshooter then follow the next steps.
  

Let us know the result of the troubleshooter.
