Start menu issue with roaming profile and search button .

    Hi,

I've recently made a huge research about Roaming profiles in windows 10 and how to set up the start menu layout and all of that i've tried to test it before i upgrade all the computers in the campus i made some good and bad results, the good results was i was able to export the start layout and implement it in the GPO works really fine and i was able to create the v5 roaming profile with same shortcuts and bookmarks and default settings and home page and disabling cortana by GPO and disabling the online search feature within the settings of the roaming profile,
now for the bad results were that the sign in could take from 25 till 40 seconds so the log off, and the major issue is that when you logon with the roaming profile the start menu and search are not available, it means that when you click on start menu the whole start menu doesnt pop up just nothing happens same as the search function i've had a thread on technet seems they could help only with the layout export but no reply on the start menu i wonder if anyone could give me a good suggestion , work arround , or a solid solution, i am running windows 10 enterprise .
PS: i forgot to mention that even the EDGE icon from taskbar disappears so i think its not either moving files or folders arent being synchronized im not really sure. IE remains

Start Menu & Cortana Fails on random users after joining the domain

There is a known issue with roaming profiles, so are the problematic users perhaps using this,

while the not affected are not?

  3. Win 10 1511 Post Upgrade Issues Start, Cortana, Edge, Action Center, Roaming Profiles

    KB3147458 installed,
Roaming Profile on the computer was deleted, Powershell scripts ran, rebooted, and only Edge now works. Cortana, Start Menu search, tiles, Windows Store, Calculator, etc, all still broken.

The issue remains for many of us. For those that this appeared to fix, time will tell as in the past people have reported deleting the roaming profile from the computer and/or server only to have the problem eventually come back.

Thanks for responding regarding your resolution of the start menu problem. Could I possibly trouble you to share your fix please?
We have seen issues with roaming and mandatory profiles - we've given up on Mandatory for the moment but any assistance would be welcomed.

    Many thanks

Actually ill be glad to assist you, first of all go to your Active directory users and computers and create a new user and lets call him UserTest , then on another machine create a shared folder where UserTest is the owner and we suppose the folder your created was named ProfileTest on a machine called MachineTest. Now go back to active directory users and computers and right click properties on the UserTest and set its profile path to : \\MachineTest\ProfileTest\RoamingProfile ( RoamingProfile folder will be created as soon as you logon with UserTest to a machine for the first time )
Now go to a machine login with UserTest and wait the welcome screen as it loads, you will notice that a folder was created in the path \\MachineTest\ProfileTest\RoamingProfile.V5 (.V5 is the extension for windows 10 roaming profiles)
now all you have to do is customize your windows the way you like from settings to themes to background anything except for the start menu .
Now after finishing the customization of windows setting and everything we come down to the start menu all you have to do is Unpin all the icons you dont need and Pin all the icons you need and arrange the way you like after you finish customizing the start menu you need to export its layout by the following Command from powershell :
    Export-StartLayout -Path C:\start.xml
It can be exported anywhere you like other than C:\, you must run PS as administrator. Now keep the XML file locally on the pc somewhere Like in D:\ or anywhere, ill suppose you kept it in C:\Layout\startmenu.xml and share the folder Layout with permission everyone to read
Now from the same machine open gpedit.msc and look for Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar > Start Screen Layout Set it to enabled place the path to \\PcName\Layout\startmenu.xml (PCname can be replaced with ip)
Now after customizing the start menu and your windows settings and setting the XML file into the gpedit.msc its time to logoff so the UserTest sync its files into the folder RoamingProfile.V5 . Now after logging off navigate to the folder ProfileTest Take away the ownership of UserTest restore it to its default owner and rename NTuser.DAT to NTuser.MAN and give the folder RoamingProfile.V5 permisison to read by everyone and voila create a new user assign the profile path to \\MachineTest\ProfileTest\RoamingProfile
( do not enter .v5 at the end while assigning the profile path to a user ) and see if the profile works or not .
Note: as far as i tested the XML file of the start menu should be on the PC locally and the GPO rule should be made on the PC locally cause if you place it via GPO on the server it might work and might not as in to show you missing icons from start menu or sometime it doesnt open at all .

let me know what happens with you
    Regards.

Start menu issue with roaming profile and search button .

If i try your described steps, the UserTest only stores locally a new profile but not on the server.
If i copy (no problem with windows 7) a local profile to the server i can't open the start menu. What's wrong here?

    Dear Braun,
The user you created in Active Directory did you point his profile to a empty shared folder with full access to authenticated users ?

The user rights seem to be ok, because with Windows 7 i can create a new user and his new profile is saved under the shared folder when i log off the user (profile.V2). With Windows 10 the folder (profile.V5) isn't created.
If i try to copy a local windows 10 profile to the server (rename the local profile to default and copy this profile with the windows function "copy profile") there is no problem with windows 7. But with windows 10 i can't open the start menu with the left mouse click - only the Win-X Menu with the right mouse click.

Do exactly how I tell you .
Create an empty folder and share it with full rights to authenticated users .
Next navigate to active directory users and computers create an empty OU and create a user in the OU.
Next right click properties on the user and navigate to profile tab in the profile tab add the profile path as stated : \\pcname\sharedfoldername\anyname
Do not add .v5 at the end of anyname .
Next logon to any PC Windows 10 connected to the domain make a small Change like anything then logoff the profile folder should be created in the shared directory automatically with the extension .v5
    Waiting your reply

I did it how you described it. The first time no folder was created. When i did this with windows 7 - no problem.
After two hours i tried it again and now it worked with Windows 10 Education. I can't explain that.
Now i have to set the correct rights to this folder and then i will try next week if i can use this as a default roaming profile with a correct start menu.

    Thanks a lot.
