Windows 10: Start Menu. Possibly a self inflicted problem. It is to small.

Discus and support Start Menu. Possibly a self inflicted problem. It is to small. in Windows 10 Support to solve the problem; One other thing: Do you have the device set to it's native resolution and at 100% dpi? Because your Taskbar looks curiously crowded. Looks like large... Discussion in 'Windows 10 Support' started by Mooly, Aug 13, 2016.

Looks like large icons, Cortana search box, and Task View button take up all the room to me ... but only Mooly can answer these things *Biggrin

Hi Andre. Yes I did try the trouble-shooter yesterday (thanks) but no luck.

However there is more to this tale...... the restored back image would not allow the start menu to be resized. Even my discovery of pulling the cursor all the way over to the right does nothing and it all seems tied in to the dpi setting. If I change that back to 100% I can rescale the menu. Set it to 125% and I can not.

Now this never happened in the previous versions (pre AU) and I'm using the same video drivers and so on. So at this moment it seems like I'm stuck with the issue although I can use the 'display full start screen' option that uses 100% of the desktop space.

This is the look I was aiming for and this is on a Dell 17" laptop. This gives an idea of the scale of things and how large and small icons look. In the previous Ten versions I could get pretty close to this on the old Acer.

Ok, I'm not sure which screen to look at *Sad

There might be a clue in the screen shots in post# 1

One, like the image in post# 16, shows 1600x900 - the other shows 1440x900. The 160 resolution difference can make exact screen matching difficult.

Post# 16 looks to be the same as the first pic in Post# 1 ... except the Start is different (1511 in post# 1 and 1607 in post# 16)

Post# 15 has an image that I believe is the layout you're trying to adjust.
If I'm correct, please let me know, you won't have to post another shot until you make a change.

The easiest thing to do is to drag the tiles you want in a group to a new group in an empty area of the pinned Start (the empty group bar is highlighted). Click on the empty group name and name it something meaningful
Then drag other tiles into that group

Do that for all tiles - put them in the group you choose and name the group so it's easy to identify. Don't worry about the arrangement yet - just get the tiles grouped.

When you have your tiles grouped the way it makes sense to you, then drag the group bar to the location you want it on the pinned Start. It might be a little tricky because it auto-arranges. Once you get the hang of it, you can bounce the groups and tiles in or between groups around more easily.

If there is enough room on the pinned Start, you can affect the space between the group columns, if there is not enough space, the tiles wrap.

Sorry, yes I see how that can be confusing.

Post #16 was taken from my Dell 17" laptop and is a current image of how its set up with the Anniversary Update. That is the look I'm after on the old Acer, and pre Anniversary Update I could in fact get close to this (two customisable name fields in the horizontal plane).

Post #1 shows the Dell start menu from just before I clean installed AU. I just took a screen shot of it for reference so that I could rebuild both PC's the same way. Second shot in post #1 is how the Acer ends up when used with the same screen settings (dpi etc) as I've always used.

Did you tried to disable "show more tiles"? In the first picture your tiles settings (row) is narrower.

Yes I did, but it makes no difference to the actual start screen. The only thing that works is lowering the dpi setting, but that makes everything to small.

Too bad. From how it looks I was hoping you will get two rows.

I can see me using the full start screen option on this particular laptop.

  10. Thanks - for reference could you post the Acer Start as it is now and I can focus on that as you make (if you make) changes) along the way.

    Final update on all this.

I couldn't get the start menu to open at a size that would accommodate all that I wanted in the way that it did pre Anniversary Update. I've settled on using the full start screen option as can be seen here, and which I actually quite like.
