  1. Start menu search stops finding indexed files after multiple times searching

When I try to search for indexed documents through the Start Menu either through pressing Start button and typing in the keywords, or directly typing into the search box in toolbar, it will show me results on the first 3-6 times, but afterwards it will only show me results from Apps and Settings. It will only revert to working state after restarting Windows Search service. Is this a known bug?At first, I thought it was a corrupt index, so I rebuilt the index. Still, it doesn't work. And since the problem disappears after restarting the service, it does suggest that the index is not broken.

  2. Searching (from the Start menu) only finds some of my files

    Hi Mike,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community, we appreciate your interest in Windows 10.

I understand your concern about searching files from the Start menu.

I suggest you to try the below troubleshooting steps and check:

Step 1: Run the Performance troubleshooter.

Performance troubleshooter finds and clean up unused files and shortcuts and performs maintenance tasks.

    • Type “Troubleshooting” in the
      Search
      box and hit Enter.

    • Select “System Maintenance” from the
      Troubleshooter window.

    • Select “Advance” and click on “Run as Administrator”.

    • Click “Next” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting process.

Step 2: I suggest you to
    restart Windows Search service.

Windows Search service provides content indexing, property caching and search results for files, e-mails and other contents.

    • Click Start, type
Services.msc in the Start Search box.

    • Scroll down the list of services, right-click
      Windows Search and select Start.

    • Also, right-click
      and select Properties for
Windows Search and set its Startup Type to
      Automatic.

Hope it helps. Feel free to contact us for further assistance on Windows Operating System, we will be happy to help you.

    Not indexing (searching) truecrypt volume

I can't get windows 10 to search mounted truecrypt volumes, ie, type part of the file name into the "search windows" box and it doesn't bring up a "best match", I just get "no results found".
I have added the volumes to indexing locations in the indexing options (eg local disk W) and it appears to be indexing it. They are listed in the "included locations" and after a few minutes indexed items goes up from 3,000 to 10,000 but the search box doesn't find any of the files.
I have tried restarting the services
    net stop wmpnetworksvc
    net stop WSearch
    net start Wsearch
    net start wmpnetworksvc
And also "rebuild index" but it still doesn't function.

    Any suggestions?

  4. Start menu search stops finding indexed files after multiple times searching

    disable the start menu search

    Hi Darrell,

If you really don’t use Windows Search much, you can disable indexing completely by turning off the Windows Search service. However, disabling the open file menu is not possible in Windows 10.

To disable the Windows Search, kindly follow these steps:

    • Click on Start and search for Services.
    • Select Services from the list of results.
    • On the right side of the Services window, find the
      Windows Search
      entry and click it twice.
    • In the Startup type drop-down menu, select the
      Disabled
option. This will prevent Windows Search from loading the next time you start your computer.
    • Click the Stop button to go ahead and stop the Windows Search service now. When the service has stopped, click on
      Apply button.
    • Click on OK button, and then restart your computer.

Let us know if you have any other concerns.
