Windows 10: Start menu thumbnails - useless

As I recall, when I floated the mouse pointer over a task bar icon in Windows 7 it displayed a fairly complete version of the names of the files the application was editing.


In Windows 10 it displays a a thumbnail of the application's window below a truncated filename.


How can I make Windows 10 behave like Windows 7 in this instance?


The default Windows 10 behavior is useless to me. Most of my work involves having two or more files open at once, with similar content and long names that are identical except for a suffix that Windows 10 rarely shows. The thumbnails don't help me tell which is which. Full size displays usually wouldn't help. I need the complete filename.

Many thanks for you reply. I have done all the steps you suggested, but no change,

When I open a folder containing photos, some open correctly but the vast majority open with thumbnails, but they very quickly get overwritten and you can not longer see the thumbnails.

Are there any more suggestions?

Follow the steps provided below to turn Thumbnails on/off:

• Open File Explorer.
• In the Menu bar, click on View and then Options.
• In the View tab, uncheck/check the option for “Display file icon on thumbnails” to disable/enable thumbnails.

Windows 10 Start menu is empty

Hi. Steps 1 and 2 didn't do much but step 3 has restored what looks like the list of original Microsoft apps but no sign of any of the many apps I have installed. And there are no tiles in the start menu. Any suggestions please?
