    Start menu

Hi all I am a newbie to this site, forgive me if this has been posted. I have lost the use of the start menu in Windows 10 now when I hover over or left click nothing happens, I can right click & get the menus up. Since this has happened my windows 10 does not seem to respond as fast as it did.

Anyone with any ideas how to fix this.

    :)

Hello acer56 Welcome to the Ten Forums!

Join the club! is a harsh reality for that type of problem assuming this is happening to a recent upgrade install to 10 and not a clean install performed afterwards?! When going to upgrade another HP model laptop I ran into a very familiar problem where there was no Start button seen, the Settings screen was entirely blank, and No Access at all to the AllApps previously All Programs menu! Solution?

Well expecting the upgrade to be buggy while the second desktop wasn't being a "1 out 3" that actually worked out I immediately dumped the upgrade with a clean install of 10 which packed everything up! But having plans to move from the 32bit 7 Home Premium into the 64bit 10 Home with the laptop having 3gb of memory another clean install followed.

With each clean install that followed everything was working as it should. The first one was the 32bit to see if there was going to be any activation problem where none was seen and then onto the second clean install for the 64bit 10. Apparently you are running into the same type of problem where this would be the solution as upgrade installs can be buggy!

With the first desktop in fact here a second upgrade was used to get the first to work! That was during the first week 10 was available and wouldn't activate on it's own due to the servers being tied up! Now for how to go about seeing a clean install if you didn't already download 10 and see it written to a usb flash drive, burned to a blank dvd, or saved to a folder on the drive you may want to take advantage of the Media Creation Tool option outlined in the guide for this. Windows 10 ISO Download - Windows 10 Forums[2]=Installation%20and%20Setup

For performing a clean install you will want to review the guide for that as well. The 10 installer has a few new twists of it's own where you will be familiarized with a few things outlined there! Windows 10 - Clean Install - Windows 10 Forums[2]=Installation%20and%20Setup

I have upgraded from Win 8.1. which I hated. Wish I could use win 7 again I found that OS had no problems at all I still have the disk would this be too drastic to move back ?

  6. Depends on two things: (1) what came preinstalled on your PC, and (2) what's on the "disk".

If your PC came with Win7 preinstalled and the disk came with it, it's more likely a Repair CD -- which can only be used to repair startup problems and can not be used to reinstall the OS. In that case, you would do better ordering Recovery Media from the PC supplier.

If your PC came with Win8x preinstalled, the problem then is that even a Win7 DVD won't do you any good as the product key is in the UEFI firmware on the PC and it can not be used to activate Win7.

Try the fix that Snowe gave you. If that doesn't work follow Night Hawk suggestion. A clean install fixes a lot of issues. Once you have 10 running correctly you'll like it at least as well as 7. If you have to go through all the trouble fixing it, you might as well fix 10 as opposed to reinstalling a 2 generation back os. Like you I liked 7 a lot, and skipped 8 all together. Now I'm a big fan of 10.

Here I run a pair of desktops each seeing a dual boot of 7 with 10. On the second case being a mini tower case(NZXT Vulcan with carrying handle) I can only fit two hard drives unless unless using a 5.25" drive adapter since the case allows for a second optical. I ended up putting in a larger second drive where I restored an image made of 7 some time back as well as seeing it split up for a second backup partition there plus another drive in an external enclosure covers storage where a clean install is never a problem at any time!

I think too often the one thing people never think ahead on is expecting problems with each and every new version when first out. The 7 beta builds were a little rough as well as the RCs but 7 got the immediate "Run out of the box" reputation compared to the headaches people had with XP and still quite a few for Vista. So far the main issues seen with 10 are not that uncommon except when having any additional storage drive(s) plugged in and the 10 installer gets confused!

Running 10 is like first getting into the 64bit Windows where it's search and destroy to find out what drivers if any will actually be needed mostly when something is incompatible since 10 seems to be able to find and install the rest on it;s own which is a step upward there. Back with 7 once 7 was on you then had to find everything yourself or already have it available. And now upon finally looking at the 8.1 Enterprise edition on VM you still had to put up with Metro only not in face every startup! I ran the 8 CP for a bit and besides not caring for substitute Start menus that had to be manually started up each session 8 wasn't what many wanted to see.

For the HP Envy series that does see support for the following.

That was at device-driver dot org there. Device Driver: Download HP ENVY Drivers

Presently HP shows two of the five total Envy desktop models seeing 7 Pro x64 coming preinstalled. Envy Desktop | HP® Official Store

Now there was one place that did carry recovery disk images for 7 some time back but I doubt the site still has them now where you could see 7 put on any machine simply using the product key on the sticker on the older models. That would be located on the back of a desktop or back or bottom of a laptop. Some places still carry Dell full install or other single flavor OEM disks for setting up a dual boot as long as HP has the drivers and apps for that model. With a desktop you have the option of adding a second drive or splitting up a larger one for dual booting.
