Windows 10: Start screen missing

over the past few days when I click the start icon nothing happens as I used to then get the Start screen...I read of a possible fix and it said to click on Start and then go to Settings and then go to Personalize and then go to Start and click on " Use Full Start Screen". when I click on the start icon and right click it, I have to go to Control Panel to go to Settings and one of the options is Personalize but there are three choices below it and one of them does not say go to " Start" and then click Use Full Screen. I don't know if this is related or not, but over the same period of time recently, I get an email that I receive every couple of days and there is a link in the email. When I click on the link over the past few days, nothing happens. Any advice would be appreciated. I have had Windows 10 for about three months and the PC is a Dell which is about three years old.

This has been fixed but I'm reporting the problem in case it helps someone else. I wasted a lot of time on this.

I restored my 950XL using WDRT because of occasional problem with Wi-Fi.

When it was running again there was no start screen, just the apps list. If I changed the background of the start screen then the background would change but instead of tiles there would just be the app list you normally see if you swipe from the right.

I tried soft and hard resets and clean installs but this always happened.

Then, at last, I chose a random app from the list and pinned it to the start screen.

Magic. The start screen appeared. Only that one tile was there: the phone, messaging etc. I would have expected had to added.

Yes, I realise that now. Perhaps I should have known in the first place but I didn't and so I thought it might save someone else both time and hassle if I posted it here, where a search might find it.

I don't know why the start screen didn't restore. It's too late too check but I thought that I was loading the same build but new firmware.
